1.9 Zone Entrainment

DANGER
Dust deposits on or in the area of the machine
Danger to life from the explosion of a flammable combination of dust/air.
– There may not be any dust deposits on or in the area of the ma-
chine.
1. Never clean with compressed air! The turbulence can cause a
flammable mixture of dust/air!
2. Check the machine and drive groups for dust deposits on a regular
basis.
3. Vacuum the deposits of machine surfaces and the drive sets. Use a
vacuum cleaner suited and approved to the Ex zone!
4. In case of doubt, get in contact with the manufacturer.

A potentially explosive atmosphere can also form when there are leaks
caused by damage, even if the machine is operated in an area with no
potentially explosive atmosphere.
There is a potential risk of explosion due to e.g.:
▪ dust deposits in the form of smoldering material on hot surfaces ca-
pable of igniting a dust/ air mixture,
▪ sudden swirling dust producing a dust/ air mixture that can come into
contact with an ignition source,
▪ an ignitable mixture of dust and air created when MULTICOR is
opened for service work.
Perform routine inspections to ensure that no substantial dust deposits
as defined in explosion protection guidelines are able to form on or near
MULTICOR. Take appropriate measures to ensure that a potentially ex-
plosive atmosphere does not develop.

Important Operating Instructions

3 Important Operating Instructions

3.1 Electrical Equipment

All electrical operating equipment has to be checked, certified and wired
for the category or zone it is supposed to be used in (plant wiring).

3.1.1 Control signals with malfunctions

DANGER
Unacceptable MULTICOR control
Explosion with risk of fatal injury.
– MULTICOR may only be used together with the control unit sup-
plied.
1. Only use the control unit supplied.
⇨ Safe operation.

For instance, the control unit supplied indicates a fault from being out-
side of the measuring range where the measuring rotor is grinding unac-
ceptably against stationary components (such as due to foreign particles
or damage).
Please proceed as follows in this case:
▪ Stop the machine immediately.
▪ Check the measuring rotor.
▪ Replace damaged parts immediately.
▪ Restore the intended state for MULTICOR before starting it up.

3.2 Air Supply

DANGER
Incorrect operation of the MULTICOR K
Explosion with risk of fatal injury.
– Follow the instructions in the manual.
1. Read them thoroughly and contact the manufacturer in case of any
questions.
⇨ Safe operation.

MULTICOR K is to be used only in combination with a secured air flush-

ing mechanism for the shaft and measuring bearing seals for explosion
protection. The equipment supplied is therefore equipped with an inte-
grated air supply monitor which immediately stops the MULTICOR K in
the event of an interruption of the air supply.

MULTICOR® K50/K80/K120/K180, Supplementary Manual EX BV-H2276GB, V11

Schenck Process Group - 23 -
Important Operating Instructions

The required quality of the air supply must be guaranteed during opera-
tion. Follow the instructions in the manuals BV-H2021 and BV-H2273.
The air supply is necessary for safe operation over time in terms of ex-
plosion protection.
Operation of the machine without the proper air supply will result in the
degrading of the measuring function and increased wear of the shaft
seals.
A pressure switch monitors the pressure pending in the compressed-air
pipe for the air flushing of the bearing seals. The device is switched off if
the pressure falls below a minimum.

3.3 EMC Requirements

Always comply with the EMC conditions necessary for operation. You
can read other information in the product documentation folder for the
electrical equipment.

3.4 Converter Mode

Converter mode electrical motors have to be suited for and certified for
their category. Any limit speeds specified in the "Intended use" section
must not be exceeded in converter mode under any circumstances.
For converters installed by the customer, appropriate measures must be
taken to prevent unwanted adjustment of the permissible limit speeds.

3.5 Lightning Protection

Secure the plant against overvoltage and implement it as per local and
state regulations. Overvoltage can be induced by lightning strikes in the
vicinity of the supply and measuring lines or the network cable.
We therefore offer additional protection modules and additional protec-
tive measures for the required protection that are described in the manu-
al BV-H2059.

1. Read the product documentation for your machine and contact the
manufacturer if there are any questions.
⇨ Safe operation.

Ensure that the MULTICELL has been connected and is operated ac-
cording to the instructions in the manuals and that all connections are
sealed.

4.2 Electrical System

The MULITICOR mass flow rate measuring instrument should only be
used in connection with the electronic evaluation equipment supplied. It
registers any friction and impact processes caused by faults as an unu-
sual measurement error and automatically turns the machine off.
The machine's measuring function registers any friction or impact pro-
cesses caused by faults as an unusual measurement error. This meas-
urement error automatically turns off the machine with the hardware con-
trol mechanism.
This is guaranteed by the fact that the parameters of the supplied elec-
tronic evaluation equipment and evaluation software are set at the facto-
ry. A power failure does not produce any hazardous situation in the
MULTICOR mass flow rate measuring instrument.

4.2.1 Potential Equalization

MULTICOR is equipped with potential equalization lines for switching on
upstream and downstream plant components on the housing. They have
to be incorporated into the external potential equalization for the entire
system as per the building regulations in force.

4.2.2 Cathodic Corrosion Protection

If a plant is equipped with cathodic corrosion protection, a small amount
of current continuously flows over the housing construction. This is not
allowed for use on the MULTIDOS standard variant, unless special
measures have been taken. Please consult Schenck Process if you are
planning to implement cathodic corrosion protection.

to the low external voltage ground at low impedance at least in the safe
area.
Shielding may also be connected to ground in the explosion danger area
if they
▪ are connected through a (small) capacitor (refer to building regula-
tions) or
▪ are protected by a stronger parallel PA (no hazard from sparks
and/or heat from electricity).

6.2.1 Inspecting the Measuring Gear

The measuring gear can be inspected indirectly as the measuring sig-
nals react rapidly and sensitively to any damage in the interior of the
measuring gear.
Observe the following criteria when indirectly checking the measuring
gear (assuming that there are no other causes for the deviations):
▪ The evaluation electronics' zero point wanders.
▪ Control measurements of the feed results are inaccurate because
– Measuring bearing is damaged or soiled, or
– there are foreign particles in the measuring rotor that are causing
grinding.
▪ There are audible abnormal operating noises.
▪ The measuring gear has a temperature of over 100 °C for bulk mate-
rials with temperatures of ≤ 80 °C.
