TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
INTRODUCTION
Philosophy in general term is explained as being a theory or attitude that acts as a guiding

principle for behaviour. For academic discipline, philosophy of education is a statement or set

of statements that identifies and clarifies the beliefs, values and understandings of an individual

or group with respect to education. Teaching is an interactive process involving classroom talk

which takes place between teacher and students and occurs during definable activities. This

means that in teaching, learners should not be only recipient of the information specified by the

teacher in the course of teaching but rather should be engage in the teaching process through

interaction.

STATEMENT OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

As a teacher in the teaching profession, my teaching philosophy is that, learners build mastery of

information based on prior knowledge and interactive process. This becomes relatively

permanent with them when given the needed guidance and interaction as well as activities which

make learning interesting.

VALIDITY OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The validity of my teaching philosophy is based on the following constructivist theory of

learning:

 According to Ausubel in Azure (2018), meaningful learning occurs when there is

appropriate link between prior knowledge and new learning task.

 According to Bruner in Azure (2018), learners are not passive recipient of information

but they actively construct their knowledge in interactions with the environment and

peers through the recognition of their mental structures.

 According to Jonsson in Azure (2018), the brain filters inputs from words to produce its

own unique reality.

The learning theories above validate the facts that, learners are not just recipient of

information during teaching process but they rather recognize their mental structures to

develop ideas based on their prior information as well as information from the outside.

APPLICATION OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

In accordance to my teaching philosophy;

 I questioned learners existing knowledge before introduction of new topics.

 I built upon learners responds even if their knowledge seemed different from the

formal curriculum.

 I served as a guide providing access to information rather than spoon-feeding

them.

 I encouraged collaborative learning, for learners to work with and learn from one

another.

 Diagrams made on cardboards in relation to the topics were displayed for class

discussion.

 Exercises and assignments were given after the completion of every lesson.
EFFECTIVENESS OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The effectiveness of my teaching philosophy was assessed by;

 The responds from students in relation to their prior knowledge provided

more ideas which helped me in introducing new topics.

 Learners accepted corrections by me in relation to responds that were

different from the formal curriculum.
 Learners had the opportunity to also contribute their ideas in relation to the
topics.
 An interesting and competitive learning community was developed among
learners as they learnt from one another.
 Learners had the opportunity to carefully observe the diagrams been
displayed and confidently described the diagrams based on their opinion.
 Feedbacks obtained from exercises and assignments indicated that students
truly understood the concept of lessons taught.

CONCLUSION

My ultimate goal as teacher is to give learners positive and meaningful experience in my course
and it depends on the learners. This is because learners have deeply internalized basic concepts
of a course and must have opportunity to express their experience and success.
