Can and Could
Can and Could are modal verbs that you can use to express ability, possibility, or
ask permission. They really work as auxiliary verbs, so you should always place
them before the main verb of the sentence so that it conditions it.
The verb Can is a modal verb that we use to:
1. Talk about something and someone having the ability to do something, for
example:
She can sing. Ella puede cantar
He she can run very fast. El puede correr muy rápido.
2. We also use it to ask or give permission, for example:
Can I ask you a favor? ¿Puedo pedirte un favor?
You can eat grapes if you want. Puedes comer uvas si quieres.
On the other hand, we use Could:
1. To express that something is possible or the probability that something will
happen.
It could be nice. Sería genial.
You could travel. Podrías viajar.
2. To ask permission in a more friendly and formal way than what you would do
with can:
Could you help me? ¿Podrías ayudarme?
Could talk to you? ¿Podría hablar contigo?
3. We also use it as the past tense of the verb can, when we want to refer to a skill
that we had or that someone else had. For example:
When I was young I could sleep all night.
Cuando era joven podía dormir toda la noche.
To make a negative sentence with these verbs, just add the conjunction NOT after
the modal verb.
If we want to abbreviate the verbs and the conjunction we can use Can't or
Couldn’t
What time is it?
Keep in mind:
Let’s Practice: Answer what time these events are?
