7.1 Balanced Three Phase Voltages

Three phase AC circuit is an AC circuit where three phase voltages supply a three-phase load.

Balanced Three Phase AC Voltages (Supply)

In a balanced three phase supply, the phase voltages are equal in magnitude and are out of phase
by 1200 with each other.

The phase sequence is the time order in which the voltages pass through their respective
maximum values. Hence, the phase sequence of the three phase voltages shown above is abc.

There are basically two configurations of balanced three phase sources.


• Star (Y) connected three phase sources
• Delta (Δ) connected three phase sources
