TYPES OF THREE PHASE CIRCUITS
On the basis of type of connections, three phase circuits can be classified in
two types:-
1. Star Type Connection:- In star connection, there is four wire, three
wires are phase wire and fourth is neutral which is taken from
the star point. Star connection is preferred for long distance
power transmission because it is having the neutral point..

2. Delta Type Connection:- In delta connection, there is three wires

alone and no neutral terminal is taken. Normally delta
connection is preferred for short distance due to the problem of
unbalanced current in the circuit.

REAL POWER
For single phase circuit, Average power is :- Vph. Iph. CosØ.
Now, for a balanced system, total power in all three phases,

P = 3.Vph.Iph.cosØ
For Star Connection, Power P in terms of Line quanitties:-

P= 3.(VL/√3).IL. cosØ = √3.VL.IL. cosØ

For Delta Connection, Power P in terms of Line quanitties:-

P= 3.(IL/√3).VL. cosØ= √3.VL.IL. cosØ

(Where, Ø is angle of load Impedence.)
APPARENT POWER & REACTIVE POWER

Similarly, Apparent Power and Reactive Power can also be derived from the results of
single phase circuits. i.e.

Apparent Power for three phase circuit is equal to,

Apparent Power= √3.VL.IL

Reactive Power for three phase circuit is equal to,

Reactive Power= √3.VL.IL. sinØ

(a) For Star Connection,

Phase voltage,
VP =VL/√3=415/√3=240 V.

Phase current,
Ip =Vp/Zp =240/16.55=14.50 A.

Line current,
