Numerical Problems
1. Calculate the weight of air (23% oxygen by weight) required for the complete of 16 kg of
methane.
2. Calculate the amount of minimum air required for complete combustion of 1kg of fuel
containing C=80% H=5% O =1% N =2% remainder is ash.
3. A sample coal contains 80% carbon 15% hydrogen and the rest oxygen. Calculate the
weight as well volume of air needed for the complete combustion of 5.0 kg of this coal
sample. (air contains 21% of oxygen by volume and 23% of oxygen by weight).
4. A fuel sample analysis by weight as follows C=90% H=8% S = 0.5% O=1.0% ash =0.6%
calculate the minimum quantity of air required for the complete combustion of 1kg of the
fuel.
5. Gross calorific value of a fuel is 3500 cal/g if it contains 6.5% H 2 calculate its net calorific
value.
6. A producer gas has the following combustion by volume: CO2=80% CO=27.6% H2=10%
CH4=1.2% N2=52.6% O2=0.6%.
Calculate the gross calorific value of gas calorific value of H2=3100 Kcal/m3 CO=2970lcal/m3
CH4=9260Kcal/m3.
7. 0.935g of a solid fuel burnt in a bomb calorimeter containing 1.365g of water the increase
in temperature is 2.4oC, water equivalent of calorimeter is 0.135g. Calculate the higher
calorific value.
8. Find a) mass of air required for complete combustion of 2.5 kg of coal b) volume of air
required for complete combustion of 1.5 kg coal given the percentage of 0 2 in air is 23% by
mass and 21% by volume.
