I. Introduction
According to Wikipedia, “An internship is a period of work experience offered by an
organization for a limited period of time.” Internship is a program that allows the intern to attain
knowledge and experience first-hand of the mechanics of a real world job. Instead of dreaming
and only hearing of the job the students are eyeing for, they can instead be on the scene and rate it
themselves.

Therefore, this program is held by IPH Schools to give their students experience on
working a real job. It is to educate the students on their so called dream job or goals and help them
make a wise decision in their pathway to the future they want to build.

The internship program have 3 different stages, planning, preparation and execution. In
planning, the students are asked to pick their interest and what internship jobs will they most likely
take. Soon after, these results will be received and the school will choose the
organization/company that would best suit the students interest.

Preparation starts once the school have decided which organization/company to do the
program with. They will start building the connection and apply their students for the said
organization/company. They will also prepare the students by helping them make a CV to send to
the organization/company that will work with the school. They will also prepare a google form for
the students to finally discuss which organization/company they are interested to intern in. Not
long after, the school will be submitting the names of the interested students as well as their
finished CV to each company where the company will decide which students to take in.

Once all the students are already accepted to their workplace, the execution stage is started.
From the 5th till the 11th of December all students of Grade 11 will start the intern program in the
respective organization/company. Every now and then the teachers will come for a surprise visit
to ensure that the students are in fact interning. The school will then require the students to submit
a report regarding the program accompanied by a presentation given in front of their supervisors.

II. Overview of Tong Tji
Tong Tji is one of the most popular local tea brand in Indonesia. Tong Tji stood since 1938
in Tegal, Jawa Tengah and have branched to hundreds of locations all around in Indonesia. Tong
Tji sells tea bags for their consumers to brew at home buat also have dine in places such as their
teabars and teahouse typically found in Indonesian malls. Although, their more popular attraction
is the stands they open anywhere where they sell a selection of drinks with a sales promotion girl
operating the stand.

The hierarchy of each region will start with their Regional Manager overviewing the whole
Tong Tji operation in said region. They will be accompanied by the Operational Manager assisting
the Regional Manager. Right below them will be the supervisors which are divided into 2 groups.
The on-field and office supervisors. On-field supervisors will manage the operation of staffs, cooks,
waiters of the teabars, teahouse, stands and others, while Office supervisors manage the operation
of the Accountants, HR department and others.

III. Learning Experience
My experience interning for Tong Tji as a high school student is nothing short of amazing.
Me and my partner, Alice, we were welcomed warmly by the staffs of the office. In the short time
of 5 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., we were placed in the Human Resources department as well
as a dip in the Accounting department.

Our task in the Human Resources department includes, recruitment of employees starting
from screening through the applications, inviting for interviews, interviewing and assessing the
candidates until signing employee contracts and renewals of contracts as well. We are taught the
basic evaluations the HR department when screening through the applications and their way of
inviting the applicants for an interview. We are given the inside scoop on producing a strong CV
as well as the standards of Tong Tji employees.

With much gratitude to the Surabaya Regional Manager of Tong Tji, Suk Andreas, we were
able to also experience the work of an accountant. We were taught the basics of filing a report and
using excel.

Thanks to our supervisors, we are able to finish the internship program with great health
and more wisdom than before.

I learned that there are no differentiation in the Tong Tji workplace that sometimes may be
hard to see from other workplaces. In Tong Tji everyone has equal chances and opportunity in
achieving their goals. Other than that I received so much wisdom and is able to understand how to
work in an office. I learned that I have to be strict and make cutthroat decisions on who to interview
and whatnot.

IV. Conclusion and Closing
I am thankful for the opportunity that the school and Tong Tji have given me to be able to
intern as a high school student in such a renown company. I believe this experience will change
my views of the world and I will always remember the wisdom it left me. I personally believe that
this program is such a great experience to acquire and I would like to experience a program similar
to this internship program to have such experience all over again.
