Athleta

Athleta was founded in 1998 to meet the unique needs of athletic women. Today, Athleta
operates more than 200 stores in the United States and Canada.

Athleta was founded in 1998 to meet the unique needs of athletic women. Acquired by Gap, Inc.
in 2008, we opened our first store in Mill Valley, California in 2011. 2016 saw the launch of the
community-driven Power of She campaign and the debut of Athleta Girl. In 2018, we became a
certified B Corp, reinforcing our commitment to business as a force for good.

Allyson Felix became Athleta’s first-ever sponsored athlete in 2019, changing the conversation
around athlete sponsorships—particularly for female athletes. In 2020, we launched the Power of
She Fund, providing grants to organizations reaching women and girls through movement and
connection. In 2021, we introduced inclusive sizing (XXS-3X), launched AthletaWell, an
immersive digital community for women’s wellbeing, and welcomed Simone Biles as our second
holistic partner. That year we also opened our first company operated stores in Canada,
introducing our brand to even more women. In 2022, we added musician and entrepreneur Alicia
Keys to our roster of purpose driven partnerships, which included product offerings, community
and wellbeing resources.

Values of Athleta
Inspiration. Motivation. Connection. It’s what we do best. We built this brand on the belief that
what unites us as active women and girls is stronger than any obstacles in our way. We know
that when all women come together, we’re unstoppable, and we aim to inspire that feeling of
community in everything we do.

We set ambitious goals to challenge ourselves—and others—to work differently. We are a brand
designed by women, for women creating beautiful, technical, and sustainable clothing.

B corporation mean:

At Athleta, we've always done business differently, putting our mission at the core of everything
we do. In 2018, we became a certified B Corp-joining a global community of thousands of
businesses that meet high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency.

We're working to lessen our footprint by choosing recycled materials like plastic bottles and
fabric scraps, utilizing organic cotton, and investing in renewable energy. We acknowledge that
protecting the planet goes hand in hand with improving the well-being of women and girls, and
that's why we're committed to empowering women through our internal operations, in our
communities and abroad in our supply chain.

Behind the Design

Meet Joelle and Nina, two Athleta team members who embody our values inside the design
studio and beyond. Learn how working for a B Corp helps to shape their creative process and
sense of purpose, as well as connects them more deeply to the environment they strive to protect.

Materials

Fabrics that go the distance with a lighter footprint. Organic Cotton, grown from non-genetically
modified plants and does not use any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizer or
pesticides.

Reclaimed plastic bottles ---- Recycled polyester chips ----- Recycled polyester yarn

We give used plastic bottles a second life as premium, recycled polyester fibers. This process
uses significantly less water and energy than conventional methods, and reduce waste.

*We classify sustainable products as being made with at least 30% preferred materials like
recycled nylon/polyester, organically-grown cotton, or TENCEL™

A better future for us and our planet starts with empowerment of all women
and girls.

In many cotton-growing communities in India, women walk an average of 1.2 miles to the
nearest water source to collect clean water. This can take up to four hours a day.

We believe access to clean, safe water is a fundamental right. It’s why we seek to improve and
sustain the health and well-being of women and communities touched by the apparel industry.
Through the USAID Gap Inc. Women + Water Alliance, we work to catalyze women as water
champions to advance lasting solutions for water access in India.

Pooja Doriya, a Women + Water champion in her village, used the knowledge and tools she
gained from the Women + Water trainings to advocate for improved water access for 150
households in her community.

Now, Pooja and the women in her village no longer need to walk for water.

Pooja says, “From the time we’ve saved every day by not walking for water, the women of the
village and I can now spend that time with our families and take time out for ourselves, too. With
the time that we have left, we work in our farms, which has resulted in a growth in our incomes.”

The relationship between water and women is unbreakable; water is an

essential part of women’s lives.

Certified B Corporation means:

Benefits all the people, all the communities and planet. Vision is inclusive, equitable and
regenerative world.

“I often wonder to what extent business can help society in its goals and alleviate poverty,
preserve ecosystems, and build strong communities and institutions... B Lab has proven
that there is a way.” Madeleine Albright, Former U.S. Secretary of State

B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified

performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable
giving to supply chain practices and input materials. In order to achieve certification, a company
must:

 Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment

score of 80 or above and passing our risk review. Multinational corporations must also meet
baseline requirement standards.
 Make a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable
to all stakeholders, not just shareholders, and achieve benefit corporation status if available in
their jurisdiction.
 Exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against B
Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.

As leaders in the movement for economic systems change, B Corps reap remarkable benefits.
They build trust with consumers, communities, and suppliers; attract and retain employees; and
draw mission-aligned investors. As they are required to undergo the verification process every
three years in order to recertify, B Corps are by definition also focused on continuous
improvement, leading to their long-term resiliency.

B Corp Certification is holistic, not exclusively focused on a single social or environmental

issue. And the process to achieve and maintain certification is rigorous and requires engaging
teams and departments across your company. Taking company size and profile into account,
verification involves documentation of your company’s business model and information about
your operations, structure, and various work processes, as well as review of potential public
complaints and possible site visits. Recertification confirms these standards continue to be met
on an ongoing basis.
