Overview of the Court

2.1 A short overview of Dhaka Judge Court

Dhaka Judge Court is a significant judicial institution located in Dhaka, the capital city of
Bangladesh. It serves as the principal court for both civil and criminal cases within its
jurisdiction. Here is a short overview of Dhaka Judge Court:

Dhaka Judge Court has jurisdiction over a wide range of cases that fall within its geographical
boundaries. It handles both civil and criminal matters, ranging from minor offenses to serious
crimes and high-value civil disputes.

The court is organized hierarchically with various levels of judges and judicial officers. It
consists of a District Judge who serves as the administrative head of the court. The District
Judge is assisted by Additional District Judges, Chief Judicial Magistrates, and other judicial
officers.

Dhaka Judge Court hears civil cases related to property disputes, contract disputes, commercial
matters, family matters, inheritance, and other civil disputes. The court is responsible for
ensuring fair adjudication and resolution of civil disputes according to the relevant laws and
legal procedures.

The court handles criminal cases, including offenses of different levels of severity. These can
range from minor offenses like theft and assault to more serious crimes such as murder, rape,
and drug offenses. The court conducts trials, examines evidence, listens to witnesses, and
delivers judgments in criminal cases.

Under the Dhaka Judge Court, there are subordinate courts that handle specific types of cases.
These include the District Judge Court, Additional District Judge Court, Chief Judicial
Magistrate Court, Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Family

Chapter: Four

Critical observation and findings

During my internship at the Dhaka Judge courts, I made several critical observations and
findings. Despite the relatively short duration of the internship, I encountered certain barriers
and limitations that impacted the depth of my learning experience. The vastness of the legal
field makes it challenging to fully grasp all its intricacies within a span of one or two months.

Additionally, due to our status as interns and not being licensed advocates, we were unable to
actively participate in courtroom proceedings when the judge presided over the court. This
restricted our ability to directly observe and engage in the practical aspects of legal
proceedings.

However, despite these limitations, the internship provided valuable insights and benefits.
Practicing within the court environment offered a privileged opportunity to gain practical
knowledge about legal provisions, document preparation, and writing attendance petitions.
This initial exposure to different legal areas will undoubtedly prove beneficial in my future
endeavors within the legal profession.

While the internship duration may have been limited, the experiences and knowledge gained
have laid a foundation for further development and learning. It has highlighted the importance
of continuous learning and practical engagement to acquire a comprehensive understanding of
the legal field. Moving forward, I aim to build upon the foundations established during this
internship and continue expanding my legal knowledge and skills.

Recommendations and conclusion

5.1 Recommendations

Based on my internship experience, I would like to offer the following recommendations for
upcoming interns in the legal field:

5.1.1 Seek guidance from learned seniors:

It is essential to work under the supervision and guidance of experienced and knowledgeable
senior advocates. Their expertise and mentorship can provide valuable insights and practical
knowledge that textbooks alone cannot offer. Take advantage of their experience and seek
their guidance to enhance your understanding of the legal profession.

5.1.2 Dedicate yourself to the work:

Approach your internship with dedication and a willingness to learn. Immerse yourself in the
tasks assigned to you, whether it's handling clients, writing legal drafts, or dealing with
problems. By actively participating and engaging in the work, you can develop practical skills
and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and intricacies of the legal profession.

5.1.3 Embrace the opportunity to aid society:

Working in an advocate's chamber allows you to witness the impact of the legal profession on
society. Recognize the privilege and responsibility that comes with being a lawyer, and let it
inspire you to make a positive difference. Use your knowledge and skills to contribute to the
betterment of society and uphold justice.

5.1.4 Continuously learn and improve:

The internship is just the beginning of your journey in the legal field. It is crucial to recognize
that learning is a lifelong process. Take every opportunity to expand your legal knowledge,
stay updated with new developments in the law, and sharpen your skills. Be proactive in
seeking new learning opportunities, such as attending workshops, seminars, and continuing
education programs.

By the above recommendations, upcoming interns can make the most of their internship experience
and lay a strong foundation for their future legal careers. Remember that the internship is a
steppingstone towards becoming a competent and responsible lawyer who can positively impact
society.

5.2 Conclusion
The short duration of the internship course indeed presents limitations in terms of achieving
comprehensive knowledge and expertise in the legal profession. However, I was fortunate to
have the guidance and mentorship of a learned senior advocate, Khaibur Rahman (Alhaz).
Under his supervision, I was able to acquire valuable knowledge and skills that will
undoubtedly benefit me in the future.

Page | 13
It is important to acknowledge that the internship experience is just the beginning of a legal
career. To become a lawyer, one must continue to practice under the guidance of a learned
senior and diligently follow their instructions. The role of a learned senior advocate is crucial
in shaping and refining the skills and expertise of young legal professionals.
By practicing under the supervision of a learned senior advocate, aspiring lawyers can gain
practical insights, refine their legal skills, and navigate the complexities of the legal profession.
Following the guidance of a seasoned professional is essential for professional growth and the
development of a strong foundation in the legal field.
While the internship course provides an initial introduction to the legal profession, it is through
continuous learning, practical experience, and mentorship that aspiring lawyers can truly excel
and thrive in their careers. The internship serves as a stepping stone, and the journey toward
becoming a competent lawyer involves ongoing dedication, learning, and mentorship.
