1. Background
Lightweight equipment is defined as all vehicle types in the EU Middle Mile network with a Gross Vehicle
Weight less than 7.5 ton. Lightweight vehicle types include: 1) SPRINTER_VAN, 2) BOX_SPRINTER_VAN, 3)
BOX_SPRINTER_VAN_TL, 4) SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK, and 5) SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK_TL. Figure 1
shows the dimensions and the capacity of these vehicles. “TL” shows if the vehicle has a tail lift as its standard
equipment.
Figure 1: Lightweight equipment in ATS EU LH*

Table A: Dimensions of lightweight equipment vary according to manufacturers and body builders. The dimensions in the figure are the
general guidelines of the equipment types used in the middle mile network.

AMAZON CONFIDENTIAL 1
In order to enable a smooth operation at our sites and not to affect customer orders, we have defined a set
of standards that these vehicles have to comply with.

2. SPRINTER_VAN / BOX_SPRINTER_VAN / BOX_SPRINTER_VAN_TL

For the 1) SPRINTER_VAN, 2) BOX_SPRINTER_VAN and 3) BOX_SPRINTER_VAN_TL, carriers need to comply
with the following specifications:

1. SPRINTER_VAN / BOX_SPRINTER_VAN / BOX_SPRINTER_VAN_TL have a

permitted Gross Vehicle Weight of up to 3,500 kg (F.2 on registration
paper). Figure 2 shows an example of a van registration paper, with a
permitted Gross Vehicle Weight of 3,500 kg and payload of 705 kg.
Payload of the truck indicates how much weight the truck can be loaded
with and is calculated as a difference between gross truck weight (F.2) and
empty weight of the truck (G).
Figure 2: Van registration papers
Please note registration papers must be provided physically at the site,
with certain specific exceptions. Electronic copies of registration papers will not be accepted except in
PL.

2. Loading height of the van is defined as the distance from the ground to the loading bed of the vehicle.
SPRINTER_VAN has a loading height of ~600mm and BOX_SPRINTER_VAN has a loading height of
~900mm. These types of vehicles are received through special van doors at sites or through their taillift
(if it is a BOX_SPRINTER_VAN_TL).

3. Inner height of these types of vehicles (clearance) must be minimum 1,8 mm (SPRINTER_VAN). Please
refer to the table A for other accepted inner heights.

AMAZON CONFIDENTIAL 2
4. Only vans with rigid bodies are accepted.

5. Vans with rear curtains are not allowed. Vans with a little tail flap is not allowed
(presented in Figure 3):

6. Door opening angle to be 270 degrees and opening to sides. Doors must be secured Figure 3: Truck with tail flap
to the truck when open.

7. Load Security: Trucks must have suitable means of securing the load in transit,
otherwise it will be rejected (example in Figure 4).. The following means are
considered as acceptable: Load containment straps, load containment bars,
webbing lashings / straps. Any restraining equipment needs to be checked
annually and inspections plate needs to be on the equipment., Securing straps
Figure 4: Netting inside the vehicle
must not be allowed to hang freely, to prevent trips and falls. Load can be secured
by any type of standard equipment listed above as long as it is compatible with the
transporting equipment type and legal requirements. It is not recommended to use load bars with
spring loaded / ratchet handles as these have a higher risk of causing injuries to associates hands. The
truck without such means will not be accepted.

8. PIT loading: PITs are not allowed inside sprinter vans/box vans due to weight limitation. Only manual
pallet jacks or light powered pallet jacks (LPPJ) are allowed to be used inside vans.

3. SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK / SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK_TL
For the SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK / SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK_TL, carriers need to comply with the
following specifications:

1. SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK / SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK_TL must have a permitted Gross Vehicle

Weight of 7,499 kg (should be less than 7.5t to comply with the driving
ban regulation). The payload of the truck must be in the range of 2,000
kg (+/- 500 kg). This needs to be clearly stated in the registration papers
of the truck (see Figure 5).
• In the registration document box F.2 value, which indicates the
GVW, must be equal to 7,499 kg.
• Box G is the empty weight of the truck. The difference between
F.2 (GVW) and G (Vehicle Empty Weight) shows the payload of Figure 5: 7.5t truck registration papers
the truck.
• Sites will REJECT any trucks that do not fit in the definition of a 7.5t (sending a 3.5t instead of
a 7.5t). We do not accept trailers when we raise a bid for 7.5t/3.5t.

Please note registration papers must be provided physically at the site, except for in specific cases.
Electronic copies of registration papers will not be accepted.

AMAZON CONFIDENTIAL 3
There are some cases where the permitted gross vehicle weight of the truck
will be 7,200 kg (see Figure 6). These are for example Iveco Daily type vehicles,
of which carriers prefer to use. In this case, we do consider these types of
vehicles as a 7.5t truck, as long as the loading height of the vehicle do match
the site’s requirements. (See the list of requirements shared in the carrier
newsletter for site-specific loading height requirements).

2. Loading height of the vehicle (distance from the ground to the loading bed of
Figure 6: 7.2t truck -> accepted only if
the truck as presented in Figure 7) must be compliant with the Amazon site
the loading height fits the EHS
requirements, which is found in list of requirements shared in the carrier requirements
newsletter or Carrier Library, marked in the column as the “Minimum
loading height for the 7.5t truck (when fully loaded) - in mm”. The minimum
loading height changes according to the dock door height and the length
of the dock leveler of the site. The loading height per site shown in the list
of requirements needs to be fulfilled by the truck when it’s fully loaded to
the maximum weight and capacity. Please check both the origin and
destination sites for the load and always take the higher “minimum loading
height” requirement. Figure 7: Loading height of the truck

3. Width of the box body must be > 2450 mm so that a dock leveler could be placed inside the box body.

Figure 8: Width of the truck

4. Height of the box body must be minimum 2,300 mm so that the associates can safely load/unload the
vehicles.

Figure 9: Height of the box body

5. The truck is requested to have rigid/barn style doors, opening 270 degrees to the sides. The doors must
be secured against the body of the vehicle when open.

AMAZON CONFIDENTIAL 4
Figure 10: Examples of rigid body box trucks with the correct type of door

6. Trucks with rear curtain doors are allowed only in our sites when the rear curtain door can be opened by
the driver completely, including the metal string for sealing. The preferred method is to open the trailer
from the ground level. If this isn’t possible, the driver should use a pole with a hook. For the curtain sided
trucks there should be no damages on the curtain...

Figure 11: Examples of curtain box trucks including rear door

• Rear vehicle doors and curtains must be opened by the driver without the use of accessories that
imply a safety risk for the drivers or Amazon personnel. Drivers are not permitted access to a trailer
floor from ground level when on Amazon premises, drivers are not permitted to work at height – all
activities must be from ground level unless using tail lifts or suitable vehicle integrated steps and
handles. Any loading / unloading must satisfy all safety criteria.
• Drivers must NOT climb on the rear of trailers to close doors / curtains or inspect the load. If required,
a pole from ground level can be used to move the rear curtain into place. The vehicles door opening
system must be in good operating order..
• The Amazon associates must be able to close the rear curtain and put the metal string on for sealing
without any safety hazards. If the area manager/safety POCs decide there is no safe way of handling
the rear curtain, they will reject the truck.

Figure 12: Amazon associates must be able to close and seal the rear curtain without any safety hazards.

7. Taillift availability: Please check the list of requirements shared in the carrier
newsletter and Carrier Library if the site is able to accept trucks with taillifts.
We ask for 7.5t trucks without a taillift for our operations, because we can
receive these trucks from the same dock doors as standard trailers. Trucks with
a taillift are acceptable depending on the site setup. If the taillift is available
on the truck, then it must be stowed under the truck or under the dock door
during the operation, as the truck will load/unload at the dock door. In some
cases, we will ask for a 7.5t truck with a taillift. We will specify this in our
request to you.
Figure 14: Truck with a taillift stowed
under the box
8. Door opening angle to be 270 degrees and opening to sides.

9. Pallet capacity: must be minimum 8 UK pallets or 12 EU pallets.

10. Load Security: Trucks must have suitable means of securing the load in transit (seals, netting, load bars,
straps etc.), otherwise it will be rejected. One of the following load securing methods must be used:
• 1x4 ton net
• 2x2 ton bar
• 2x2 ton strap

11. Curtain 7.5t trucks/Sidewalls: Please utilize trucks meeting minimum requirements
for the strength of vehicle bodies in accordance to EN12642-XL standard to provide
safe load securing. Any trucks without clear marking (example in Figure 15) should Figure 15: Example
be assumed as non-compliant for standard load securing and can be rejected. For the marking of XL Curtain
truck
curtain sided trucks there should be no damages on the curtain.

12. PIT loading: Ride on - PITs are not allowed inside 7.5 ton trucks due to weight limitation. Only manual
pallet jacks, light powered pallet jacks (LPPJ) and single-pallet pedestrian controlled PITs (EPJ, PPPJ) are
allowed to be used inside 7.5 ton trucks.

13. Model examples: Mercedes Atego 818, Eurocargo ML75E, DAF LF150, MAN TGL etc.

Figures 16: 7.5t truck model examples

AMAZON CONFIDENTIAL 6
Figures 17: Standard dock door

How to recognize a 7.5t truck from the cab:

• If Mercedes, it is their Atego model and they should have a “818” on the driver door.
• If DAF, it is their LF model, it is their LF 150, 160 or 170 model.
• If IVECO, it should be their Eurocargo model, ML75 model or Iveco Daily 7.2t.
• If MAN brand, then TGL with 818 number on the driver door.

4. Not Acceptable SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK / SEVEN_HALF_TON_TRUCK_TL

1. If a 7.5t truck is a converted box van/truck (Mercedes Sprinter, Renault
Master etc.) or the Gross Vehicle Weight is 3.5t or less, these vehicles
are too low to be loaded/unloaded at the dock doors. These vehicles
will be considered as a van instead of a 7.5t truck and will be rejected.

2. Trucks with only side opening as seen in Figure 18 are not accepted.

3. No unexpected equipment/personal belongings to be found inside the Figure 18: Trucks with only side opening
truck when it comes to the site (e.g. personal belongings, excess
equipment).

4. Not secure equipment types will be rejected (Figure 19 shows damages on the
vehicle curtain).

5. We do NOT accept door types (top hatch) as below (Figure 20)

Figure 19: Damages on the curtain

Figure 20: Door openings on the top and bottom

6. 7.5t trucks will be rejected if the truck is lower than the minimum loading height required by the site
and creates too steep of an incline on the dock levelers, as seen below (Figure 21).
