As we all know, self-image is the idea of how we see ourselves, be it internal or external

perspectives. On myself, I never really cared about my self-image, I just want other
people to know who I am and judge me thoroughly if only they completely know me very
well.

First, let’s talk about what self-image is all about. Self-image is our own perception or
mental representation of ourselves. Every person has a different view of their self-
image, some may be bad and others may be good or positive. A basis for constructing a
person's character is their perception of themselves, both positively and negatively. It is
normal to have different views in self-image because every person is unique and does
not share the same life experiences.

Learning produces a self-image. Parents and other early childhood caregivers have a
significant impact on how we view ourselves. They serve as mirrors that reflect our own
reflections back to us. The reflection in the mirror is enhanced by our interactions with
others, including our professors, friends, and family. Relationships validate our internal
thoughts and feelings.

An individual's self-image can have both positive and negative effects. Having a positive
sense of who we are can benefit our overall health, including our physical, mental,
social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. On the other hand, having a poor opinion of
ourselves can make us feel unfulfilled and unqualified in these capacities. Anxiety,
stress, loneliness, and a higher risk of depression are some additional negative
repercussions of having a poor sense of oneself. generate issues in romantic and
interpersonal relationships. severely hinder work and academic performance. increase a
person's susceptibility to drug and alcohol misuse.

According to Oltman (2014), there are three elements of self-image which are: The way
a person perceives or thinks of themselves, what a person thinks others think about
themselves, and, the way a person would like to be, or their ideal self. These idea is
true as these are what and individual may think about their self-image. Also, not all
individual may have the same thinking as everyone. People usually have different
mindset, which means that, what Oltman says may or may not be done or applied by
every individual.

The idea or image of oneself that was initially introduced by Morris Rosenberg in 1965
is known as one's self-image (the sort of person we think we are). This also pertains to
gender and body image. He was also one of the first in-depth explorations of self-image
in his book entitled “Society and the Adolescent Self-Image”. Rosenberg introduce
different dimensions about on how individual see the perception of an individual about
oneself. The dimension he mentioned helped me see the different areas such as
physical, psychological, intellectual, skills, moral and sexual that an individual evaluates
their selves based on what they lack.

We can find strategies to enhance our self-image, therefore we shouldn't be down about
it. By consistently turning losses into successes, one might develop a positive self-
perception. Additionally, self-image is malleable and developable. By doing this, the
person making the change might boost their self-confidence in a crucial area. As
reported by Hutcherson, et al (2008), people can improve their capacity to offer
themselves unconditional positive regard by employing nonjudgmental reflection to
become more conscious of destructive thought patterns. Additionally, it has been
demonstrated that meditation increases one's sense of social connectivity. We shouldn’t
broad and be down about our self-image.
Finally, to answer the question on how should I develop my own self-image. I’ll be gladly
use both the perception of myself and other people on how they view myself and use it
to improve and work on my self-image. Again, the way we perceive ourselves has an
impact on how we feel about ourselves, how we connect with others, and how we
perceive the world around us. Our physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well-
being can all be improved by having a healthy sense of self. On the other side, a
negative view of ourselves can make us feel less satisfied and less capable in these
areas.
