[Participants will arrive to SS 215 where they will be greeted by Dolores Garcia and

seated according to arrival. The consent forms and pencils will be placed on the tables
prior to seating the participants. Consent forms will be numbered and all others forms
distributed will share corresponding numbers. Once everyone has been seated Dolores
will take a seat in the back of the room.]

[Nicky Guzman will already be in place in the front and center of the room, to greet and
give further instructions.]

Nicky: Hello, welcome to our study. We’d like to thank you for participating. Please
direct your attention to the sheet of paper in front of you and follow along as I
read. Feel free to ask any questions regarding anything you may not understand
after I have finished. [Reads the consent form aloud] If you understand and agree to
this consent form please take a moment to sign and date as instructed on the
consent form. If there are any questions regarding this form you may now raise
your hand and ask. [Pause] In the top corner of this form there is a number listed,
please take note of this number and make sure that any form you receive from
now on has the same number listed. Your consent forms will now be collected.

[Trina Sidia will collect all forms and pencils and put them into numerical order while
seated as Nadia approaches the participants and Nicky takes a seat in the designated
area in the back of the room.]

[Nadia passes out the topic sheet]

Nadia Porras: For this study you will be asked to give a speech, no longer than 30
seconds, to a group of 35 participants, in a room upstairs. You will be given
preparation time to practice your speech prior to being escorted upstairs. You are
now going to receive a short survey that you will have about 2 minutes to
complete, please raise your hand as soon as you are finished and again make
sure that the number in the top corner of the survey matches the same number
that was listed on your consent form. [Nadia will hand out survey, participants will be
given 2 minutes to complete] Your surveys will now be collected [Trina will collect
surveys as Samantha follows and passes out the topic sheet] The sheet in front of you
is a list of topics you are to include in your speech and reviewed as you are
practicing.

Students in the control group will be instructed as accordingly by Exp 1:

Exp. 1: You will now be asked to practice giving your speech out loud. We
ask that you do this on your own and please refrain from communication with
fellow participants. Although we will not be in close vicinity to see you, we will be
able to hear you, and ask that you stay on task. Please be sure to practice your
speeches out loud as if you were giving them to the awaiting audience. You will
have 3 minutes to do so and then we will return. [turn on timer as experimenters exit]

Students in the manipulation group will be instructed as accordingly by Exp 1:

Exp. 1: You will now be asked to practice giving your speech out loud with a
partner who will be assigned to you. We ask that you both do this together and
please refrain from communication with any fellow participants other than
your partner. Although we will not be in close vicinity to see you, we will be able
to hear you, and ask that you stay on task. Please be sure to practice your
speeches out loud as if you were giving them to th awaiting audience. You
will have 3 minutes to do so and then we will return. [After 3 minutes has passed
and timer has gone off, experimenters will return to the room]

[Students will be asked to return to their seats if they are out of them and asked for their
attention towards the front for experimenter 5. They will be handed a blank copy of the
previous anxiety survey by experimenter 3 and asked to not turn it over. All
experimenters will be seated except for exp 5.]

Exp. 5: You have just been handed another survey, before escorting you upstairs
for your speech we will give you a couple minutes to first complete this. We ask
that you not turn this paper over until instructed to do so and again please make
sure that the number in the top corner matches the same number from before.
[After 2 minutes have participants flip their papers over]. There are a few more
questions we would like you to answer on the back side of this form. You may
now turn your papers over and continue answering these questions. When you
have finished we ask that you raise your hands so that we may collect them.

[Experimenter 3 will collect all forms. Once they have all been received, experimenter 2
will hand out the debriefing form to all participants, experimenter 5 will be seated and
experimenter 4 will approach the participants]

Exp 4: Our study will now be concluded. You have just received a copy of our
debriefing form and I ask that you please read it along with me. [reads debriefing
form out loud] If you have any questions at all you may ask them now or ask any of
the experimenters as you exit the room. [pause for questions] Please remember that
this is a current ongoing study and it is very important that you not discuss
anything regarding the experiment with anyone else until the end of the semester.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter. We thank you
very much for your participation and contributions! As the experimenters guide
you out we ask that you please turn in any forms that were not collected from you
and please do not forget to ask for proof of your participation as you walk out,
again you will need to turn this in to your instructor if it is required for any extra
credit. Thank you once again, you are now dismissed!

[Experimenters will head to the exit and assist participants with questions, collection of
any uncollected materials, and handing out proof of participation forms]
