EARTHWORK

SUBMITTED BY: INNOCENT J. REVOCATUS

INTRODUCTION
Earthwork is a process of cutting and removing earth from the borrow pits, transporting and placing it in a
form of embankment. The purpose is to keep the formation level higher than the natural ground level.
The sequence of operation for embankment installation are as follows;
1. Making profile of embankment as located from the design of coordinates by using global
positioning system GPS.
2. Stripping of the top soil which is not a suitable to the specified depth and those material are stored
to the suitable location known as dump site.
3. Construction of embankment begins on the road bed by filling different layers which does not
exceed 250 mm and compacted with road roller depending on the nature of material.

TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY SYSTEM USED

 Bulldozer: used for excavating to remove topsoil layer to the required depth.
 Grader: used to level the soil surface.
 Loader: used to load the material onto dumpers, truck etc.
 Compactors/rollers: are used to compact materials.
 Dump trucks: are used to carry materials in a larger quantity from one site to another.
 Water bowser trucks: used to supply water for moisturizing dry materials.
 Spades: for adding materials to parts which have no enough fill after compaction.

PEOPLE ON SITE
 Drivers
 General Foreman
 Labors
 Practical training student

CHALLENGES ON-SITE
 Excessive dust caused by moving trucks and when materials being deposited on site.
 The soil materials are dry.
 The depth of filling requires many number of layers.

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS
 The service road has to be watered before and during the work.
 Water has to be added to moisten the soil materials.
 Lessen lift depth of fill.
