TITLE : LESSON 1 NEW AND EMERGING CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN SOCIETIES

Today, humanity is facing many problems. The increasing complexity of the world, even though it gets
smaller because of globalization and technology, challenges humans to be more responsive and attuned
to the environment and the people around.

What is contemporary issue?

Any modern-day trend, event, idea, or topic around a current subject that is relevant to people can be
defined as a contemporary issue. From climate change to technology, social issues to health,
contemporary issues abound in almost every area of our current lives.

Contemporary issues help shape the fabric of our society. Some contemporary issues are useful and
unifying for society like electronic banking while others can be divisive such as politics, climate issues,
and more.

LESSON 2 : Approaches and Responses to emerging challenges in contemporary societies

Modern cultures face a wide range of complex and evolving difficulties, from social, economic, and
environmental issues to technology breakthroughs. To tackle these obstacles, these challenges requires
a combination of innovative approaches and comprehensive responses.

Here are some approaches and responses to emerging challenges in contemporary societies:

1. Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
• Approach: Encourage collaboration across different disciplines and fields.
• Response: Foster interdisciplinary research, education, and policymaking
to address complex challenges that span multiple domains.
2. Technology and Innovation:
• Approach: Embrace technological advancements to find solutions.
• Response: Develop and implement innovative technologies to address
challenges in areas such as healthcare, education, climate change, and
communication.
3. Global Cooperation:
• Approach: Recognize that many challenges are global in nature.
• Response: Promote international collaboration and cooperation to tackle
issues like pandemics, climate change, and economic inequality.
4. Sustainable Development:
• Approach: Emphasize sustainable practices in all aspects of life.
• Response: Implement policies and practices that promote environmental,
economic, and social sustainability to ensure the well-being of present and
future generations.
5. Social Justice and Inclusion:
• Approach: Prioritize equity and inclusivity in decision-making.
• Response: Develop and implement policies that address systemic
inequalities, discrimination, and social injustice in areas such as education,
employment, and healthcare.

According to Melbo (1935), contemporary issues and concerns should be studied directly. He added that
students must gain information and acquire the attitudes which are prerequisite to intelligent and
successful social action in the consideration and attempted solution of current issues. Indeed, every
government plays a vital role in responding to the physical, social and cultural challenges. However,
every one of us has a role and responsibilities to portray in order to make our world a better place to live
in. As what Helen Keller has said, alone we can do little; together we can do so much.
