Performance objective:

You need to answer the entire questions using information given to you from class and from your course
material.

Assessment description:

You must provide a response to all questions in assessment Questions section.

Assessment Questions:

Checkpoint 1
Question 1: Explain the importance of environmentally sustainable work practices?
Environmentally sustainable work practices are crucial for minimizing negative impacts on the environment.
They help conserve resources, reduce pollution, and contribute to long-term ecological balance. Implementing
sustainable practices not only benefits the planet but can also enhance corporate social responsibility, attract
environmentally conscious customers, and foster a positive public image for businesses.

Question 2: Name 2 international environmental agreements that Australia is a signatory of?

Australia is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, both of which are international
environmental agreements aimed at addressing climate change by setting targets for greenhouse gas emissions
reductions.

Question 3: Which legislation governs the environment at Federal Level? What does this cover?

At the federal level in Australia, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act)
governs environmental matters. This legislation covers the protection of biodiversity, conservation of
ecosystems, heritage places, and the regulation of activities that may impact the environment, including matters
of national environmental significance.

Question 4: Which authorities govern environmental practices at state and territory levels?

Environmental practices at the state and territory levels in Australia are typically regulated by their respective
environmental protection agencies or authorities. Each state and territory has its own agency responsible for
overseeing environmental issues and enforcing environmental regulations. For example, in New South Wales,
the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) governs environmental practices, while in Victoria, it is the
Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA Victoria). Similar authorities exist in other states and territories
to manage and regulate environmental concerns locally.

Question 5: How are environmental practices governed at local government level? What does this commonly
include?

At the local government level in Australia, environmental practices are typically governed by local councils or
municipalities. Local governments often have specific planning and development regulations that address
environmental concerns within their jurisdictions. This can include zoning regulations, waste management
policies, protection of local ecosystems, and control of pollution. Additionally, local councils may engage in
community initiatives and education programs to promote sustainable practices among residents and
businesses in their areas.

solutions to material waste in Australia. Strathfield Council is one of almost 50 Councils to join the program and work with local
businesses and the community to keep our safe and clean.

Question 2: Identify any resources and initiatives which are in place or available in your state to help business to
reduce their waste and use resources more efficiently?
. Problem and the initiatives: Over 3 billion disposable coffee cups and lids are used in Australia every year which is mostly in
NSW almost none of which are recycled. This represents a major waste gap with a significant water, carbon, paper, petroleum
and chemical footprint. A great majority of disposable cups and lids end up land filled or littered and can take thousands of
years to break down in the environment, contributing to land and marine pollution, and threatening wildlife Solution: To
address this problem, NSW is working closely with café owners and the community. The Responsible Cafés program
encourages cafés to provide a small discount to customers who bring a reusable cup. Over the course of 15 coffees, a coffee
drinker will have offset the environmental footprint of the reusable coffee cup*. Depending on the frequency of coffee
consumed and the discount applied, consumers can very quickly make up the costs of their new reusable cup as well.
Since the program began, Council has engaged many café owners on responsible cafés and provided signage to participating
businesses. Council continues to facilitate the program with ongoing discussion with our cafes and report on the impacts.
Mostly the council is working under the reducing the food waste, energy, water which are more priority for environment to keep

improvement plan which details the following:

Question 1: The purpose of the plan

The purpose of a plan is to outline a structured approach to achieve specific goals or objectives. It provides a
roadmap, guiding actions and decisions towards a desired outcome.

Question 2: An overview what has been undertaken and why?

Plan Reason
To save energy and money
Change air condition setting temp
To save environment and money
Using energy saving lights To protect environment for pollution
Using recycling bag To save money and usage for future

Saving water
Question 3: The resource areas and targets you have established based on Section 3, Part A?

Resources Target
Saving 35 cents and 30 liters
Water

Electricity Saving 0.5 cents and 20 /KWH

Recycle products
Recycle more products in proper way
Plastic bags
Reduce the use of plastic bag and introduce paper bag

Question 4: The measures and tools you will implement to achieve these targets?
Pie charts and graphs
Provide staff training.
•Microsoft excel, word, spreadsheet
Evaluating and comparing results by using computer
Using mobile applications

Question 5: Strategies that can be used to ensure staff compliance with environmental requirements and to
achieve new targets?
