ASSESSMENT 3 – WRITTEN ASSESSMENT

1 Who might you need to consult with when developing a sustainability policy?
BSBSUS501 DEVELOP WORKPLACE POLICY AND PROCEDURES FOR SUSTAINABILITY

These include shareholders, managers, employees, customers, and suppliers. Secondary stakeholders,

on the other hand, include those who are indirectly impacted by an organization or who indirectly
impact an organization. The following consultations are described below:-
1. Staff - All staff can provide input for the development of a workplace sustainability policy as
they can comment on the efficiency and effectiveness of current practices. It is vital that input
from employees is encouraged and acknowledged, and combined with the input from all other
sources.

2. Consultants and environmental agencies - There is a range of organisations that provide

reporting systems and advice; for example, the Global Reporting Initiative. The GRI produces e-
newsletters. There are members of the GRI whose advice and systems will meet the GRI standard.
Information on emissions trading can be gained from the Australian Government’s Department of the
Environment.

3. Environmental regulators and industry associations Local, national and international

environmental regulators provide advice on policy development and procedures; for example, the
Environmental Protection Authority in Victoria provides advice and conducts environmental audits.
Many recommend standards such as AS/NZS or ISO provide best practice guidelines on achieving
those standards. Industry associations also provide guidelines and information on compliance with
regulations, rules and standards.
4. Companies and businesses Many companies and businesses provide their sustainability policy,
plans, targets and approaches as part of their annual reports, or as separate publications or
announcements on their website. Such electronic documents can include policy statements and
procedures that can be analysed and considered in terms of your own organisation. Triple bottom line
reporting provides one type of stand

2 Define best practices and list three best practice approaches to sustainability , relevant to your work
area, From what sources did you obtain the information?
BSBSUS501 DEVELOP WORKPLACE POLICY AND PROCEDURES FOR SUSTAINABILITY

There are three workplace practices for better approaches to sustainability, relevant to our work area:-

1. Become involved in your community. As big believers in community involvement, our team
hosts quarterly events to support and improve the environments we live in. There are many
ways to become involved, such as community clean-up. Simply search for events in your area
and encourage your team to join. It’s a good way to spend quality time with one another and
keep the place you call home clean.
2. Change to eco-friendly office lighting, a quick fix that’s as easy as screwing in a lightbulb.
LED lightbulbs use less energy and don’t contain toxic gases like other lighting alternatives.
They also last up to five times longer.
3. Switch to post-consumer waste (PCW) paper, paper products, and packaging. Sure, you
recycle paper, but do you use recycled paper? The paper production industry is the 5th largest
energy consumer in the world. PCW recycled paper uses 45% less energy and produces half
the waste of the traditional papermaking process, reducing overall consumption from
production and consumers.

3 Research in the text book the environmental and sustainability legislation, regulations and codes of
practice applicable to the industry and the company in which you work (if not currently employed
refer to your college). Outline the intent of three pieces of legislation you have researched and
describe the regulatory authority responsible for administering the legislation?
BSBSUS501 DEVELOP WORKPLACE POLICY AND PROCEDURES FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Environmental legislation - is the collection of laws and regulations pertaining to air quality, water
quality, the wilderness, endangered wildlife and other environmental factors. The umbrella of
environmental legislation covers many laws and regulations, yet they all work together toward a
common goal, which is regulating the interaction between man and the natural world to reduce threats
to the environment and increase public health.

What is environmental management?

Environmental management involves being aware of how your business operations affect the
environment. Regardless of the size and type of business you run, it's possible to manage your impact
on the environment. This can include:
reducing your energy consumption and emissions
using water more efficiently
Managing waste better.

Why is environmental management good for business?

As well as being good for the environment, making your business more sustainable has other benefits:
Cost savings – by spending less on raw materials, energy, water and waste management.
Business reputation – people may be more likely to support a business that cares about its
impact on the environment.
Resource recovery – reducing, reusing and recycling is important for the environment and
can also be profitable.
Work health and safety – reduced use of industrial chemicals and less waste can improve
workplace health and safety.
Legal compliance – your business needs to meet certain environmental protection laws.

Energy management

Reducing energy use is not always an option. However, managing how and when you use energy can
help protect the environment and reduce your bills. Consider:
reviewing your energy bills and energy contract
looking at ways to improve energy efficiency
switching to alternative energy
shifting energy use to cheaper periods
Seeking energy finance.

4 How can equal employment opportunity and equity, diversity principles impact on the sustainability
policy?

Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) is the principle that everyone can have equal access to
employment opportunities based on merit, without fear of discrimination or harassment.
Many Australian employers develop EEO policies to promote workplace diversity and create a safe
workplace for all employees.
This article explains how EEO works and what Australian employers should include in an EEO
policy.

How Does Equal Employment Opportunity work?

The Australian Federal Government has passed numerous laws which aim to protect people from
discrimination within the workplace. These include the:
Sex Discrimination Act 1984;
Disability Discrimination Act 1992;
Age Discrimination Act 2004; and
Racial Discrimination Act 1975.

These laws, alongside other state laws, are the primary source of EEO obligations. Employers who
hire, manage or dismiss employees are not allowed to discriminate based on:
race;
ethnicity;
colour;
sex;
sexual orientation;
gender identity;
relationship status;
family or carer responsibilities;
pregnancy;
mental or physical disability;
religion;
political opinion; or
Age.

4. How would you document and provide the results of policy reviews to the stake holders, consider this in the
appropriate language for particular audiences and in terms of dealing with diversity

Process for Policy Review and Rescission

The Policy Owner is responsible for conducting a comprehensive review of their policies at a minimum of every 5

Or as required to stay current with applicable laws and/or Regents Policies.

1. if the policy is still necessary and accurate;

2. if the policy should be combined with another policy or if it should be rescinded;

3. if the policy is up to date with current laws and regulations and Regents policies;

4. if changes are required to improve the effectiveness or clarity of the policy;

6 How would you investigate successes and promote continuous improvement of performance once you have
established policy and procedures for sustainability?

The success of sustainability policies can be measured by calculating the footprint over time. An ecological

footprint is the consumption and impact of an organisation on the environment. It measures the amount of land
and water consumed by an organisation

Workplace Sustainability Policies and Procedures

Developing workplace sustainability policy Define scope of sustainability policy

When a workplace is following ‘best practice’ policies, they often need to be developed to include

Monitoring, evaluation and entrench continuous improvement. Every larger organisation needs to have an
environmental policy, to help ensure they are being held accountable to the required legislative and regulatory
guidelines.

The environmental policy is a key document in the life of an organisation, but is usually just one page in length.
This policy sets out in broad terms what the organisation will do in relation to environmental issues, complying
with environmental law and protecting the environment. It should be signed off by the CEO or Chairman of the
Board of Directors to demonstrate commitment from the top of the organisation. Most corporate policies are
available on the company’s website and are commonly repeated in the annual report.

In general, when writing a policy, you should keep in mind the size and specific needs of the organisation.
Policies should be clear and concise – don’t include lengthy processes or procedures that will be difficult to
maintain or comply with.

The structure for policy documents will vary from organisation to organisation, but some common elements
include the following:

 Purpose statement – the context of the policy, why it is required

 Scope – the application of the policy (particular location, work group, )
 Procedure – how the policy is implemented
 Roles and responsibilities – who is responsible for the implementation of the policy
 Legislation – reference any legislation that the policy specifically complies with A sustainability policy
should:
 Have a commitment to continuous environmental improvement
 Ensure the company complies with relevant environmental jaws
