1. PART A – CONDUCT A SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT

I am writing this assessment based on my previous workplace named Caltex, where I worked
as a CSA.
Caltex petroleum has managed to achieve its successful business operation through proper
management operation. By following effective areas of operation the firm’s management
must need to address specific objectives. As an international organization, Caltex has
addresses effective decisions management through different approaches and policies.
Caltex has planned different strategic priorities for successful accomplishment of long-term
business goals. Caltex wants to extend its leadership in services like; petrol, drinks and garb
and go food items. Caltex is changing the staff policy to get the advantage of using local and
international talent. Main objective of Caltex is to establish a leading value proposition
through positive business efforts. For this purpose, company focuses on hiring of highly
skilled and competent human resource.
Cost Reduction
Cost control is one of the operational objectives of Caltex. The core business purpose of
company is to avail quality products at affordable price. This can only be done through
controlling cost of operational activities. In addition to this, cost control motto can also be
fulfilled through minimization of waste.
Quality of the product
All should focus on the quality of the product, whatever product they are selling is the core
business aim of Caltex. Customers prefers the purchase the products with high quality and
competitive price structure.
Sustainability
For Caltex, sustainability is about managing the risks and opportunities in a way that best
balances the long-term needs of our stakeholders including customers, the community and
our investors. Caltex have established a sustainability framework which is focused on the key
risks and opportunities that are most relevant to our business and stakeholders. Our
framework helps us to drive improved performance and ensure that these considerations are
built into our risk management and decision-making processes. It also helps us to build
resilience to the emerging challenges and opportunities that are shaping our business.

Energy

Types of technology and equipment that runs through energy are lighting, electric oven,
computers, fridge, coffee machine, juicer machines, slushy machines, pumps, forecourt roof
lights, spot light, crushing marching, heater and air conditioner, television, ventilation.
 Regarding consumption of high energy usually fridge, lights, boiler, air condition and
electric oven are accounts for the most.
 On the other hand, television, crushing marching, ventilation and computers stands for
less energy consumption.

Many of store operate for 24 hours a day but few stores closes some lights of the store goes
into dim mode and few lights switched off, also sleep mode are turned on in some
equipment’s like computers. Currently there are few necessary measures are following by the
store management in order to minimize energy waste
After the store closes all lights in the fridge turned off and store lights goes into dim mode.
LED lights with sensors and timing are installed in area that do not require continuous
occupancy. Double glazing has been installed to windows to control the room temperature in
office.
Caltex has energy sustainability practice. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Caltex has
been investing in a range of initiatives to optimize energy use across the store, distribution
centres and support offices. Investments are being made to switch all lighting in store to
LED, improve efficiency in refrigeration and air conditioning and installing solar panels on
our roofs.

Water

Water is used due to the nature of washing required – this is usually from the kitchen or from
the laundry equipment where washing machines are used frequently through the day. It
appears that that the toilets and dishwasher use the most water, even though the washing
machine is highly rated as energy efficient. Staff are seen turning off water appropriately,
though sometimes taps are left slightly dripping. The bathroom have an automatic tap which
means a specific amount of water is released when the sensors are triggered. This is very
handy because it stops people from running the tap at full blast and for long periods of time.
There is a water tank which is used by staff and customers.
 Basically water in required to food preparation, drinking, cleaning and toilets usages.
 Mainly water uses for cleaning

The following determinates have been taken to control water uses

 Created proper water usages awareness

 Use sensor trigger taps and showers

Waste
In Caltex wastage is segregated as general waste, recycling, paper etc. From waste
management all the staff has been trained and conscious by using the useable products which
is safe for the environment. The main wasted comes from the card boards, grocery and
3
Tanveer Ahmed
produce department( baked or bakery products)due to expiry and excessive amount of food
order than need.
The following measures are installed to minimize wastes

 Appointed various contractors to take recyclable, organic waste etc.

 Color coded bins are introduced in each departments and waste are dumped based on
color code and easy to by recycle.
 Staff tend to drink a lot of coffee in the mornings and I’ve noticed they will come in
with cups of coffee made out of paper from local cafes.
 There are separate bins in the kitchen to distinguish between recyclable material and
compost.
 They use re-usable material bags when shopping for supplies and produce to minimise
using and throwing out plastic bags. This is also helpful because the material bags are
branded with the business name so works as an effective marketing tool in the
community.

Chemicals
All the cleaning products contain chemicals. Some are multipurpose products so they are
used for different cleaning tasks/jobs. Others are specific to the cleaning or washing task
required. Staff are always responsible when managing cleaning products and follow correct
work health and safety processes to ensure safe access, storage and maintenance. When
empty, they are correctly disposed of or recycled.
Some of the products have a high level of toxicity and there is a large supply of these
products in stock.
The washing detergents are environmentally friendly products which state they are safe for
the environment. The washing products in the bathrooms are also environmentally friendly
i.e. hand soaps.

Comments
I think that Caltex follows some effective sustainable practices, in particular, using low
energy rated white goods, using recycled paper, having clearly marked bins to separate waste
and food scraps, and the automatic tap in the bathroom. Waste practices are really effective
and staff seem to enjoy following these practices.
I think we could improve in the area of saving energy and how we print. I also think the
workplace policy and communication to staff could be improved considering there is an
inconsistent level of awareness across staff (this was established through informal
conversations with them). Some of them advise they had not heard or seen some of the
requirements such as the posters on processes put up around the workplace.
Moreover, workplace is environmentally friendly, as they have reduced waste, energy, water
and chemical effectively without affecting the environment.

The following areas that can be improved by practicing the sustainability strategies
 Start using solar panel on roof and operate more renewable energy
 Only buy product from those companies who supply their product using recyclable
package.
 Monthly inspection for leakage on pipes and taps.
 Use natural products where appropriate
 Use low water consumption settings on the dishwasher and similarly on the dryer
4

 Use energy saving switches

Recommendations

I assume that the strategy on energy conservation and waste management in caltex work palc
e enviroenment is missing a few points.
I believe the policy should include the following points as well:

 Employees and managers responsibilities should include that they report to the higher
authorities by submitting a report.
 The management should be make the review reports from the managers to discuss if
the policy needs to be improved or upgraded.

I believe that this policy is good for an preliminary stage of operation, we can always
improve it later.

PART C – POLICY REVIEW AND CONSULTATION

Policy scope and objective

What is this policy for? Who uses this policy? What sustainable practice does this relate to?

This policy is formed to have a constructive result of environment, as this policy is for
environmentally sustainable work practices to protect the environment and minimise the impact
of the workplace on the environment. This policy covers waste reduction and installation of new
sources of energy.

Benefits
What were the overall benefits identified?

The biggest highlight identified was that the workplace is adopting new processes and
collaborating to share ideas on how to improve current practices. Conversion of energy in Caltex
store will reduce the cost. It will create a positive effect of staff and environment. Another positive
feedback was that the policy is easy to follow and seen as practice..

Challenges/Barriers
What were the overall challenges or barriers identified?

One of the challenges referred to was the lack of direction from management for implementation
of the policy. The staff are not properly trained to smoothly work through the procedures neither
they are educated enough to understand the complex systems involved in handling energy
efficient equipment. Lack of financial resources can be a great barriers as well.

Improvements
What suggestions have been made for improvements to the practice, process or policy?
Improvements and suggestions included:
 Better signage for visual cues and reminders.
 Training sessions or updates.
 Allocated resources to improve policy review and development.
 More collaboration among staff for ideas and suggestions.
 Opportunities to reuse plastics where appropriate.

Overall effectiveness
Do the results obtained indicate an effective sustainable practice and policy? Why/Why not.

Although there are some effective methods and practices followed already, I believe there could
be a variety of improvements made. Based on the feedback received, it was evident that staff are
keen to improve our practices as they care about the environment. Suggestions for improvement
are evident that the policy and process should be reviewed and improved. Staff gave a low rating
on the effectiveness of practices.

Communicating new/updated policies

Describe your approach in communicating updates or changes to workplace policies and practices
to staff, parents and local community.
Communicating new policies and practices could involve:
 Staff training sessions.
 During weekly team meetings.
 Informal catch ups.
 Weekly workplace news.

Next steps/recommendations
Now that results and feedback have been received, explain your recommendations and next steps
to improve this policy – what would you do?
Next steps and recommendations include:
 Survey wider network of staff/management across the service.
 Have a meeting with relevant stakeholders to further review strategies for
improvement.
 Prepare a business case or request to management to allocate sufficient
resources – time, budget and key personnel to develop, communicate, monitor,
maintain, review and update the policy.
 RnD should be established to bring ideas for renewable energy resources.
