Arithmetic progression

It is a sequence that has a common difference between each term.

The Nth term of an arithmetic progression can be written as
Un= a + (n-1)d
a = first term
d = common difference

Or

L= a +(n-1)d

l is the last term

d = second term minus first term

Example 1
The first term of an arithmetic progression is -6 and the common difference is 5 .find the fourth
term and the Nth term.

The sum of an arithmetic progression

Sn=n/2[2a + (n-1)d]

Example 2
The fifth term of an Arithmetic progression is 21 and the sum of the first 6 terms is 90. Find the
18th term

Geometric progression
It is a sequence that has a common ratio between each term.
The Nth term of a geometric progression can be written as ar^n-1
Where
a is the first term
r is the common ratio

r = 2nd term ÷ 1st term

Example 3
The third term of a geometric progression is 9 and the common ratio is -3 .find the sixth term and
the Nth term.
Example 4 (November 2020)
A sequence is defined as Un=1+(-1)^n
I) list the first four terms of the sequence
Ii) describe the behavior of the sequence
b) the sum Sn of an arithmetic progression is given by Sn = n(3n+2).find the first term and
common difference.
