LECTURE TWO:

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
ENMATH11E
ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
-expression made of numbers and letters or constants and
variables along with mathematical operations
TERMS

coefficient
7𝑥 + 2 constant

variable

• Term – expression involving letters and/or numbers (called factors),

multiplied together
TERMS
LIKE TERMS

-terms that contain the same variables raised to the same power
- example: 𝟓𝒙𝟑 & 𝟖𝒙𝟑 , 𝟐𝒙𝒚 & 𝟓𝒙𝒚 , −𝟖𝐱 & 𝟒𝐱

UNLIKE TERMS
- terms that contain different variables
- Example: 𝟓𝒙𝟑 & 𝟖𝒚𝟑 , 𝟑𝒙𝒚 & 𝟒𝒚𝒛, −𝟕𝒙𝟐 & 𝟕𝒚𝟐
TYPES OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
MONOMIAL EXPRESSION – algebraic expression having only one
term.
Example: 𝟒𝒙𝟐 , 𝟑𝒚 , 𝟕𝒛𝟔 , 𝟒𝒙𝒚

BINOMIAL EXPRESSION - algebraic expression having two unlike

terms.
Example: 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟏 , 𝟓𝒚 + 𝟗 , 𝟒𝒙𝟐 𝒚 + 𝟐𝒙

POLYNOMIAL EXPRESSION - algebraic expression having more

than one term.
Example: 𝒙𝟐 − 𝒚 + 𝒛 , 𝟑𝒚 + 𝟗𝒙 + 𝟑, 𝒙𝟐 𝒚 + 𝒙 − 𝟏
DEGREE OF A TERM; DEGREE OF MULTINOMIAL

- DEGREE OF A TERM with respect to a literal factor is the exponent of that literal factor in the
term.

- Example:
- 1. ) 3𝑥 2 𝑦 3 𝑧
> 2nd degree in x , 3rd degree in y, 1st in z
> 5th degree in x and y, 6th degree in x, y and z, 4th degree in y and z
- 2. ) 4𝑥 3 𝑦 − 8𝑥 2 𝑦 2 + 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 4
> 3rd degree in x
> 4th degree in y
> 4th degree in x and y
OPERATIONS OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

1. −4𝑥 2 𝑦 + 2𝑦 −5𝑥 − 𝑥 −3 + 6𝑥 − 2𝑥 2 = −𝟒𝒙𝒚 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟏

2. 3𝑎 − 5𝑏 − 𝑎 − 3𝑐 − 3𝑏 + 2𝑐 − 3 𝑎 − 2𝑏 − 𝑐 = 𝐚 + 𝟒𝐛 + 𝟐𝐜
3. 2𝑥𝑦 2 3𝑥 2 − 2𝑦 + 5 = 𝟔𝒙𝟑 𝒚𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙𝒚𝟑 + 𝟏𝟎𝒙𝒚𝟐
4. 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥𝑦 = 𝟐𝒙𝟑 − 𝟗𝒙𝟐 𝒚 + 𝟗𝒙𝒚𝟐
4𝑎2 𝑏 3 𝑐 5 𝟐 𝒄𝟒
5. −2𝑎2 𝑏𝑐
= −𝟐𝒃
6𝑥 2 𝑦 3 −12𝑥𝑦+4𝑥𝑦 2 𝟒
6. = 𝟐𝒙𝒚𝟐 −𝟒+ 𝒚
3𝑥𝑦 𝟑
7. 𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒: 4𝑥 𝑦 − 8𝑥 𝑦 + 𝑥𝑦 3 + 𝑦 4 , by: 2x − y = 𝟐𝐱 𝟐 𝐲 − 𝟑𝐱𝐲 𝟐 − 𝐲 𝟑
3 2 2
𝟏 𝟕𝒚𝟑
8. 𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒: 8𝑦 3 + 64𝑥 3 , 𝑏𝑦: 8𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 𝟖𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙𝒚 + 𝒚𝟐 +
𝟐 𝟖𝒙+𝟐𝒚
