Module #2: Your Goal
Influence Settings
Your slicer setting is ALWAYS
based on MSP Method:

1. The Material You Use

2. The 3D Model Shape
3. The Purpose of Your Print

Example:
I need to print bird house for Canarie
1. Material You Use
I need a material withstand UV & weather resistance
Material Choice: ASA
Printing Temperature: 240°C
Build Plate Temperature: 100°C
Print Speed: 70mm/s
Travel Speed: 150mm/s
Initial Layer Speed: 30mm/s
Enable Retraction: Yes
*Refer to FDM Material Retraction Distance: 5mm
Pocket File for find the
perfect material Enable Print Cooling: No
Fan Speed: 0 mm/s
2. The 3D Model Shape
Rounded shape, no flat surface, hard to access internal

Generate Support: Yes

Support Placement: Touching Buildplate
Support Overhang Angle: 45°
Support Z Distance: 0.2mm
Enable Support Interface: Yes
Build Plate Adhesion Type: Raft
3. The Purpose of Your Print
Need to be light, withstand bird weight, surface is ok

Layer Height: 0.2mm

Line Width: 0.4mm
Wall Line Count: 3
Top/ Bottom Thickness: 3
Infill Density: 10%
Infill Pattern: Lines
Module #3: Orientation and
Support
3D Model Rotate Based On...

Priority 1: Part strength

Priority 2: Flat bottom surface
Priority 3: Minimum and easy support
Priority 1: Part Strength
If you are using printed part for application, you need to
know FDM z layer strength is weak

Example
I need a bracket to hold a partition
in my drawer

1. Find the bending force

2. Rotate 3d model, so that it is in the same plane as the
bending force

Potential break along the line Potential break along the line
Priority 2: Flat Bottom Surface
Placing the 3d model with flat bottom surface improve
adhesion to the bed. If the it is sphere, you can consider cut
in half as below.
Another trick is lower down your 3d model underneath
the build plate to get the flat surface...
Preferences>Configure Cura>General

Uncheck it

3D Model bottom
surface not flat
Priority 3: Minimum and Easy Remove support
For saving time and material

Only one support

Many support
Use Support Blocker to make Cura neglect the support placement.

Use Tree Support to further reduce waste and save more time.

Module #4: Preview and
Fix Error
The Problem
1. Non-Manifold/ Non Watertight
2. Mesh Overlap
3. Wrong Dimension
4. Part is Too Thin
1. Non-Manifold/ Non Watertight/ Zero Thickness

2. Mesh Overlap
Install Plugin: Mesh Tool
Triangular Overlap

3. Wrong Dimension
Item loaded in Cura TOO Big or Too Small
Cura use mm, if your design in inch then probably the model will
become big. Sometimes may due to output software is not compatible.

● Check the overall size whether match your design

● Use uniform scale to adjust to the actual dimension
4. Part is Too Thin
Part dimension that is less than nozzle size, slicer will
ignore it because can’t physically possible.

Solution:
1. Tick ‘Print thin Walls’
2. Design a thicker part

Note that if part that is too thin, it is not advisable to use FDM
technology as layer bonding is weak, you should consider Resin
3D Printing
Module #5: More Than You
Imagine
Vase Mode
Bottom layer + Outer Spiral Wall

Ignore infill and top

Mold
Useful when you want to create quick simple
negative part without going through design process
Not perfect but it a quick trick...
Fuzzy Skin
Useful for friction grip, animal skin, create matte
surface

without With fuzzy

Wire Print
Use airbrush nozzle for wire printing
Adaptive Layers
Layer height auto adjust depends how steep the shape is

Higher layer height
