History of Qingpeng Ointment

Qingpeng Ointment is a Tibetan medicine ancient formula, first recorded in the

16th century A.D. "Tibetan medical decision supplement", so far there have
been more than 500 years of clinical experience in Tibetan medicine with
medication, there is "the king of the coating" reputation, the Tibetan plateau
region of the cold and humid climate, the former Tibetans used to use it for
the treatment of rheumatoid arthropathy of various types.

The origin of the name of Qingpeng Ointment

For thousands of years, Tibetan medicine and Tibetan Buddhism have been
closely linked together, in the long historical process, Tibetan medicine
along with the development of Buddhism and development. Green Peng in Tibetan
medicine means "blue phoenix", which is a divine bird incarnated by Vajrapani
Bodhisattva to subdue diseases and demons. It represents the strong will of
the Tibetan people to be safe and healthy and not to yield to diseases.

Vajrapani Bodhisattva for holding a vajra mortar and pestle, often serving the
Buddha, so called Vajrapani Bodhisattva, with the vast power to eliminate evil
and subdue the devil. He has the power to eliminate all calamities and subdue
demons, and to fulfill all wishes.

Compounding and pharmacology of Qingpeng Ointment

According to the instruction manual, Qingpeng is composed of nine traditional

Tibetan medicines: echinacea, sub rhubarb, broad-skinned vine, iron rod
hammer, benzoin, musk, horehound, hairy horehound, and yuganzi [1]. According
to their medicinal properties I made the following classification:

-Echinacea has strong anti-inflammatory, decongestive, and dry yellow water

functions, and is the main drug in the formula.

-Iron stick hammer, benzoin and musk are combined to enhance anti-
inflammation, swelling, sterilization, clearing dampness, clearing heat,
dispelling wind and drying yellow water.

-Kuanxiang vine and sub rhubarb to dispel dampness, clear heat and wind.

-Hokuma, Hordeum vulgare and Eugenol as adjuvants in the formula to balance

the medicinal properties.

1
It has the effect of clearing heat, dispelling wind and inducing dampness,
which is in line with the theoretical basis of Chinese medicine in treating
eczema [2].

Modern pharmacological study of Qingpeng ointment composition and action:

Flavonoids from Echinacea, anthraquinones from Rheum officinale, and

polypeptide proteins from musk are good at anti-inflammation;

Aconitine in Ironbeam is good for analgesia, and lignans and terpenoids in

benzoin are anti-cytotoxic and antioxidant;

Tannin-like compounds in chebulin, horehound and eugenol can constrict blood

vessels and regulate immunity in addition to reducing inflammatory mediators.

In summary, Qingpeng ointment no hormone chemical ingredients, are Tibetan

medicine extracted drugs, anti-inflammatory (on redness, swelling, heat and
pain have good therapeutic effect), vasoconstriction (swelling), which also
answers the first question, Qingpeng ointment does not contain hormones. There
is also a lot of literature pointing out that the efficacy of Qingpeng
Ointment is similar to that of weakly effective topical glucocorticoid
ointment [3], but it is also pointed out that its side effects are fewer than
those of hormones and are statistically different.

There are also clinical studies show that Qingpeng ointment compared with
hydrocortisone butyrate cream for the treatment of hormone-dependent
dermatitis, the effective rate is significantly better than hydrocortisone
butyrate cream alone, the clinical trial effective rate of 77.78%, Qingpeng
ointment can be used as a hormone replacement drug in order to successfully
quit the use of hormones [4]. It also reflects the safety of the drug from the
side, the general hormone-dependent dermatitis skin barrier is severely
damaged, the choice of drugs and moisturizers is extremely harsh.

It should be noted here that the weak effect of hormones does not mean that
the effect is poor, the classification of glucocorticoids is mainly based on
the duration of their action in the body to divide: short-acting about 8-12 h,
medium-acting about 18-36 h, long-acting about 36-54 h. Weak relative to
medium-strength metabolism in the body of a short period of time, the side
effects of relatively small.

diseases [1].

It has been mentioned above that Qingpeng Ointment has the effect of anti-
inflammatory and swelling reduction. Inflammatory response is a series of
physiological reaction processes produced by the body for the harmful stimuli,
which is essential for the human body. Soluble factors involved in the
inflammatory response, such as cytokines and complements, etc., are known as
inflammatory mediators. The activation of immune cells and the shedding of
mast cells promote the release of inflammatory mediators and the occurrence of
neuroinflammatory reactions, resulting in pain. Most current clinical studies
agree on the mechanism by which Qingpeng Ointment works by regulating
inflammatory mediators.

Pharmacological study of Qingpeng ointment in the treatment of eczema

1. The mechanism of itch relief in eczema may be related to the inhibition of

histamine [5].

2. It can effectively inhibit the release of skin lesions and inflammatory

cells, histamine, reduce the infiltration of neutrophils, and regulate the
expression of inflammatory mediators IL-2, TNF-α and INF-γ [6].

3. Protecting the skin barrier, Qingpeng ointment has a slow onset of action,
stable action, and the effect is gradually enhanced, the water content of the
stratum corneum in the Qingpeng ointment group is higher than that of the
comparison group of hydrocortisone ointment (a weakly effective hormone) at
the time of 4 weeks of treatment (p<0.05) [7]. This indicates that the effect
of Qingpeng ointment is slow at the beginning, but the effect will be
gradually strengthened by continuous use, but the moisturizing effect is
better than hydrocortisone ointment, and there is a statistical difference,
which may also be related to its patented technology of "oil in water".

There is a strong transdermal effect, easy to absorb the effect of fast, high
bioavailability, both moisturizing and nourishing non-sticky and other
characteristics. [8]

Modern TCM clinics now mostly use Qingpeng ointment for the treatment of skin
diseases, including eczema, dermatitis, herpes zoster and so on. Qingpeng
ointment has good therapeutic effect, high safety, easy to use without side-
effects.
