Materials: ________________________________________________________________

Procedure:

1. Attach a paper clip to the end of copper rod, using small blobs of wax.

2. Repeat step 1 with the aluminium, nickel, brass and steel rods.

3. Set the rods up using a retort stand. Make sure they are well balanced so they will not fall

off.

4. Light the Bunsen burner. Place it under the rods and ensure that the ends of all rods are

in the same part of the flame.

5. Start the stopwatch.

6. Record the time taken for the paper clip in each rod to fall off.

Observation:

Create a table to record your measurements from the experiment.

Analysis:

1. Did all the metal rods transfer thermal energy at the same rate? Explain by using your

observation & result.

_________________________________________________________________________

2. Rank the metals in order from the best conductor to the worse conductor.

_________________________________________________________________________

Conclusion:

1. Which type of material is the best conductor of thermal energy?

2. Suggest two possible sources or error and state how you could reduce them.
