Course Code: CVE 131 1
LECTURE (3): Retaining walls

3.1. What is a retaining wall?

Structures built to retain vertical or nearly
vertical banks of earth or any material, for
example it may used to retain water.
The earth retained may be natural soil or
backfilling, the purposes in which retaining walls
are used may be presented in the figures below;

construction materials into:

3.2. Types of retaining walls

Mansory retaining walls:
These retaining walls are made of bricks, and its
resistance to lateral forces depends on its weight which
is relatively heavy, and It has limited heights up to 3 m.
These types of walls consumes a long time during the
constructing process, however, the construction costs
are relatively low.

3.2. Types of retaining walls

Plain concrete retaining walls:
These retaining walls are made of plain concrete, and
its resistance to lateral forces, as in Mansory type,
depends on its weight which is relatively heavy, also it
has limitation of heights up to 4 m.
These types of walls consumes less time during the
constructing process, however, its construction cost is
relatively high, it is also called gravity retaining walls.

3.2. Types of retaining walls

Reinforced concrete retaining walls:
Reinforcement is used to reduce concrete wall
thickness.
Gravity walls can have reinforcement in tension areas of
the concrete and it is called semi gravity, this type is
between both of the P.C, and R.C retaining walls.
One of the well know R.C retaining walls is the
counterfort type.
