ACKNOWLEDGMENT

First of all, we would like to express our heart felt gratitude to our God, who gave us good
health and capacity to learn and makes us possible to get everything we need. Secondly, we
would like to thank Ins. Kidane G. whose give us this project that is helpful for the project
coming soon.
Lastly, we would like to thanks our classmates in industrial engineering student who help us to
do and to collect the data.

Abstract
At the beginning we start with introducing the description of the sur construction plc. We
are state briefly definition of maintenance and Preventive maintenance and how they apply
it at their company. Then we directly go to objective of the project with the scope of the
project. After this we have written shortly the significance of the project and continue with
methodology, result and discussion on it. At the end we wrote conclusion,
recommendation, and reference for the project.

Introduction
Background of The Company
SUR Construction P.L.C is established by the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray
(EFFORT) in 1992 with an initial capital of Birr 108 million as a General Contractor - Grade one
(GC-1).
Since its establishment, SUR has accomplished more than 27 road projects (approximately 1194
km) and over 40 various building projects as well as 2 Airfield and 2 Hydropower projects. The
total worth of those projects to date is more than Birr 2.5 billion with vast experience in Asphalt
and Gravel Roads, Airfields, Buildings and Hydropower Projects.
Moreover, SUR is also the owner of about 1,000 heavy & light duty construction machinery and
plants with over 1,500 permanent and contract employees and about 6,000 daily laborers.
SUR has its own six stores head office building in Addis Ababa and a modern workshop and
training center at the branch office in Mekelle.
Currently, SUR is executing 12 projects all over the country worth of around Birr 2 billion and
has achieved an annual turnover of more than Birr 690 Million. they regulate all their employee
and with the absenteeism case it will have penalty of 20% to the wage.
► Maintenance is All actions appropriate for retaining an item/part/equipment in, or
restoring it to, a given condition. So, our question basically forward to preventive
maintenance in sur construction.
► Preventive maintenance: All actions carried out on a planned, periodic, and specific
schedule to keep an item/equipment in stated working condition through the process of
checking and reconditioning. These actions are precautionary steps undertaken to
forestall or lower the probability of failures or an unacceptable level of degradation in
later service, rather than correcting them after they occur.

3
Vision of the company
o The company is committed to be the center of excellence for the local construction
industries and to be one of the leading construction companies which are capable of
great understanding and strongly committed to individual creativity and initiative team
works.

Mission of the company

o To understand customers, need and ensure their satisfaction.

o To be engaged in construction business performs its activities efficiently effectively.

o To provide blend of exceptional service.

o Have an extra ordinary role in supporting the economic development endeavor of the
nation.

o Provide efficient and effective construction services and meet customers’ expectation to
higher level.

o Ensure sustainable profitability and wealth growth of the company.

4
Objective
General objective
The general aim of this project is to develop a yearly preventive maintenance of five different
machine.

Specific objective
o To identities the activity of preventive maintenance
o To identities the activity Preventive maintenance for five different machines
o To know the number of personnel in preventive maintenance
o To know the manufacture service manual of the five different machines
o To define the equipment /to/ used during activity take part

5
Scope of study
o Our project carried in Sur construction plc. About preventive maintenance.
o Our project only restricted to two machines
o We are only deal with the schedule frequency of PM on each truck
o We are unable to check for the need of PM to the two-trucks due to limitation of
data
Significance of the project
o The advantage the project to understand to practice to schedule the Preventive
maintenance.
o The purpose of the study also to know the step while schedule preventive
maintenance.

6
Methodology
Our project on preventive maintenance is conducted on sur construction plc.
o While we collect the data, we need we follow both the primary and secondary source of
data
o Through interview with truck and earth moving maintenance manger we obtain the
following information.
1. The activity commonly practiced in sur construction while they apply the
preventive maintenance are list below.
o As the maintenance manager told us the following in sur construction.
Those are
 Servicing -- Cleaning, lubricating, charging, preservation, etc., of
items/materials periodically to prevent the occurrence of
incipient failures
 Inspection – include tasks that check the condition of equipment
and determine what tools, material, and labor are required to
service them.
 Alignment – a major part of keeping equipment running smoothly
involves regular maintenance and upkeep and ensuring that
machinery is kept lubricated and properly aligned.
 Adjustment – the amount of money credited to the buyer at
closing for maintenance, cleaning, or repairs that are found to be
needed on the home at the final inspection
 Testing – is a test that is performed to either identity equipment
problems, diagnose equipment problems or to confirm that
repair measure have been effective.
 Calibration: Periodically determining the value of characteristics
of an item by comparison to a standard.
 Installation – Periodic replacement of limited-life items
2. At this company they use the following tool/equipment while the practice the
preventive maintenance program. Those are

7
Fuel gauge blower meter Torque wrench

3. Finally, while ask the maintenance manager they us the work force for PM
program as follow
o In sur construction the PM program is practiced seriously. Everyone has
duty/ responsible to apply the PM program fit order from the manager.
The way of apply PM in sur construction look like as follow.
o Chain of duty to perform PM program interconnected from the driver
until to the top maintenance manager.
1. Every driver has checklist to follow daily in order to apply simple
activities of preventive maintenance. Although the deriver is trained
to do these activities, while doing their duty. If they saw error that
need PM, they wrote comment on checklist
2. This check list sends to the maintenance manager. If the maintenance
manager accepts the error identity by the driver (operator). He/she
schedules the preventive maintenance give to the engineer.
3. The PM engineer also give an order to the technicians to do the
maintenance activity
4. While the technician (mechanic) perform this job their maintenance
supervisor and inspector.
5. At the end, if the mechanic finishes his work, the job can be approved
through the following perform. Inspector, PM engineer, maintenance
head.
Generally, in PM implementing at sur construction plc the techniques, operators, inspector and
maintenance head have their responsibility on it.
► The personnel which are employee at PM are department list below. (few of them)

Employee name Title ID. Number

► The secondary method we use to get the data by asking to manage to give us historical
status of equipment in PM. The data we get from the manager is list below.

N.B – at the schedule we take sample from the given
For both the two machines in order to approve the PM practice there are personnel
 Inspector
 PM engineer
 Finally, it approved by maintenance head manager
o The result show briefly that all the activities of both the two machines at what time
interval is carried PM activities. There is also respective operators and technician and
their higher title personnel to approve the maintenance.

15
Conclusion
We infer that our project schedules the frequency of the PM activities using the collected data.
This project is help follow to apply PM activities in dozer and sinotruck.it helpful for the
personnel which participate in maintenance of the two machines.

16
Recommendation
The actual result we found is not realistic. Because it has some limitation on data. In our level,
preparing yearly PM schedules is difficult due to the need of experiencing and full of
information on the ob. So, any who interested and wonder to develop, he/she can use this
project as reference.
