CH1: The Study of Humanities

 “humanities” originated from the Renaissance Latin expression: studia humanitatis or study of
humanitas which refers to “culture, refinement, education”
 humanities comes from the Latin humanus, which mean human, cultured, and refined
 Humanities is more concerned on how a person expresses his/her feelings.
 Art is derived from the Latin word “ars,” meaning ability or skill.
 Art is taken from the Italian word “artis,” which means craftsmanship, skill, mastery of form,
inventiveness, and the associations that exists between form and ideas, between materials and
technique.

Based on the above definitions, brings four common essentials of art:

 Art is man-made, not God-made.


 Art is creative, not imitative.
 Art benefits and satisfies – when uses art in practical life through artistic principles, taste, and skill.
 Art is expressed through a certain medium or material by which the artist communicates himself to
his fellows.

 Arts improves your creativity skills.


 Arts gives you joy and satisfaction.
 Arts relieve stress.
 Arts gives you the opportunity to showcase your talent.
 Arts gives you confidence in our performance.
 Arts help you do well academically.
 Arts helps you express your emotions.
 Art is different language because it can express things without words.

Art appreciation is the ability to interpret and understand man-made arts and enjoy them through actual
work experience with art tools and materials.

CH2: NATURE OF ART

Famous French philosopher of the 20th century described the world of art as a creative work that depicts
the world in a completely different light and perspective, and the source is due to human freedom.

CREATIVITY

 refers to our instinct and intuitive power as the highest form of species.
 the ability to create items that inspire and inform others, often in aesthetically pleasing ways.
 Creativity is universal.

THE ROLE OF CREATIVITY IN ART

 Creativity requires “thinking outside the box”


 In art, creativity is what sets apart one artwork from another.
 A creative artist does not simply copy or imitate another artist’s work.

 Imagination is more important than knowledge.
