HUMANITIES

e Is a set of discipline that includes grammar, philosophy,


literature, history, and music. The term is derived from
the Latin word HUMANUS, which means HUMAN. This
concerns humanity.
e This explains why the arts are called the HUMANITIES.
They bring the GOOD and NOBLE in us. Through the arts,
we come to know the changing image of man… striving to
achieve the ideals that create MEANING FOR LIFE.

 Humanities concerns humanity. It records or interprets


man’s thinking, feeling, regrets, aspirations, failures and
what he supposed not to do in the world.
ART
What is ART?
; Art is derived from the latin word “ARS” which means
ABILITY or SKILL.
; Art from the Italian word “ARTIS” which means
craftsmanship, skill, mastery of form, inventiveness, and
the associations that exist bet. Form and ideas, between
material and technique.
; Art is the product of man’s need to express himself.
; Art is the product of creative human activity in which
materials are shaped or selected to convey an idea,
emotion, or visually interesting form.

; The word art can refer to the visual arts, including
painting, sculpture, architecture, photography,
decorative arts, crafts, and other visual works that
combine materials or forms.
; We also use the word art in a more general sense to
encompass other forms of creative activity, such as
dance, drama, and music, or even to describe skill in
almost any activity, such as “the art of bread making”
or “the art of travel.”

means for the attainment of some end, especially by
human endeavour || the skill of creating something
beautiful by drawing, painting or making it with your
hands.

x The study of objects of art in their historical


development and stylistic contexts: genre, design,
format, style. It includes painting, scuplture,
architecture, ceramics, furniture, and other
decorative objects.
x Encompasses several methods of studying the visual
arts.

Art Appreciation

e It is the ability to interpret or understand man-


made arts and enjoy them either through actual
or work-experience with art tools and materials
or possession of these works of art for one’s
admiration and satisfaction.
e IT DEALS WITH LEARNING OR UNDERSTANDING
AND CREATING ARTS AND ENJOYING THEM.
Creativity

e the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into


reality. Creativity is characterised by the ability to
perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden
patterns, to make connections between seemingly
unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions.
Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then
producing.
e A product is creative when it is (a) novel and (b)
appropriate. A novel product is original not predictable.

e If you have ideas but don’t act on them, you are


imaginative but not creative.
