What is Art?
Art is something that is perennially around us.

• Some people may deny having to do with arts but it is indisputable that life
presents us with many forms of and opportunities for communion with the arts.
• The word ART comes from the ancient Latin, ars which means a “craft or
specialized form of skill, like carpentry or smithying or surgery” (Collingwood,
1938).

What is Art?
• Arts in Medieval Latin came to mean something different. It meant “any special
form of book- learning, such as grammar or logic, magic or astrology”
(Collingwood, 1983).
• The fine arts would come to mean “not delicate or highly skilled arts, but “beautiful
arts” (Collingwood, 1983).

What is Art?
• Art can be 2-dimensional, like paintings, drawings, and prints.
• Art can be 3-dimensional, like sculptures and ceramics.
• Art can be 4-dimensional, utilizing time as an intrinsic element, such as in
performance art, kinetic art, video art, and sound art.

• “The art constitute one of the oldest and most important means of expression
developed by man” (Dudley et al., 1960). Human history has witnessed how man
evolved not just physically but also culturally, from cave painters to men of
exquisite paintbrush users of the present

THE NATURE OF CREATIVITY

 All humans are creative; we create relationships, a home, goals for


ourselves
 Artist creates art objects.
 We create our responses to those art objects.

 It came from the Latin word “humanus” which means refined,
culture and human
Refined - Norms, being civilize, and socialize
Cultured - Adaptation to environment (social interaction, norms)
Human - Having the nature of people, being a person
HUMANITIES
 The expression of ourselves without using of words (painting,
sculptures, dancing, mosaic, cross stitch, collage, paper and
folding).
 The study of man’s expression feelings, thought, intuition, values,
and ideas.
 The study of man’s experience, goals, and aspirations.
 It is used to dramatize individual expressions.
HUMANITIES
□ Humanities came from the Latin word humanus meaning refined,
cultured and human.
- Study of the different cultural aspect of man, his frailties in life and
how it can be improved
- Records man’s quest for answers to the fundamental questions he
asks about himself and about life

□ Humanities are expressions of man’s feelings and thoughts
- Emphasizes dignity and worthiness of man and recognizes
creative expressions
- Aimed to shape student’s subjective energies (feelings,
attitudes and aspirations)

• UNDERSTANDING OF HIS NATURES
• NECESSARY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPLETE,
SOCIAL MAN
• PROVIDES MAN WITH A MEASURE OF HIS OWN PASSION &
DESIRE
• REGULATE MAN’S BEHAVIOUR
DIVISION OF ARTS
 Visual: arts that are primarily seen, occupies space
 Auditory: heard, timed arts; exist in time
 Combined/performing arts: combines visual & auditory elements
EXAMPLES:
Visual arts: paintings, sculptures and architectures

Auditory arts: music and poetry

Combined: drama & theatre, dancing, cinema & TV, opera

Creativity or Imagination
– is the primary basis of art.
PURPOSES OF ARTS
1. Create beauty – art is an expression of our
thoughts, emotions, and institutions. It is the
communication of concepts that cannot be
faithfully portrayed by works done. The
artist considered the nature as the standard
of beauty.

2. Provide decoration – artworks are used to
create a pleasing environment. It is intended
to beautify things to please and amuse the
viewers through its colors and patterns.

3. Reveal truth – artwork helped to pursue
the truth and attempted to reveal how the
world works. It is a kind of language that
allows to send a message to souls of the
recipients that help to change attitudes,
their sensibility and their ethics.

4. Express Values – art can illuminate
our inner lives and enrich our
emotional world. Through arts, the
artist will encourage to develop
creativity, challenge, and
communication skills. It also
promotes self-esteem and wellness.

5. Commemorate Experience –
arts serve to convey the
personal experience of an artist
and record their impression in
their works.

6. Create Order & Harmony – an


artist makes use of the composition
to put an order in the diverse content
of his work.
