1.1 Organizational Structure/Culture

The Sustainability Project (NPC) Pty has a hierarchical organizational structure with the board of
directors as the top-level management, middle management and low-level management. The
board of director is at the top and not answerable to anyone. Every other employee is subordinate
to the board of directors. The directions are disseminated from the top-level management to the
Middle-level management and further passed on to the employees under various departments.
The board of directors consist of two members: Gregory September and Shaheeda Davids. They
are responsible for establishing policies, guidelines and strategic objectives, as well as for
providing leadership and direction for quality management within the organization. Top level
management design plans, strategies and they pass them on to the middle management which is
then passed on to low-level management for execution.
Below are some of the responsibilities of the organization’s top management:
 Take accountability for the effectiveness of the quality management
system.
 Ensure that the quality policy and quality objectives are established for the
quality management.

 Ensure the integration of the quality management system requirements into

the organization’s business processes;
 Ensure that the resources needed for the Quality Management System are
available;
 Communicate the importance of effective quality management and of
conforming to the quality management system requirements
 Ensure that the quality management system achieves its intended results
 Engage, direct and support persons to contribute to the effectiveness of the
quality management system
 Provide improvement
 Promote the use of the process approach and risk-based thinking
 Support other relevant management roles to demonstrate their leadership as it
applies to their areas of responsibility
 Demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to customer focus
 Ensure that the responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are
assigned, communicated and understood within the organization
 Perform management review of the organization’s quality management
system
 Establish, implement and maintain a quality policy
 Ensure that the responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are
assigned, communicated and understood within the organization.

The middle-level management then communicate the strategies implemented by top

management to low-level management. The middle-level management consist of seven
managers and each one of them are responsible for each department assigned. The
Sustainability project (NPC) Pty has seven (07) sectors: Sector Succulent, Culinary, Food
security & vegetables, Medical plants & CDB, Herbs, Creative arts and Cultural aesthetic.
Additionally, they follow the plan and strategies implemented by top level management by
mobilizing resources, assigning employees with tasks and duties so as everything can flow
accordingly as planned.

Finally comers the low-level management. They put into practice and execute tasks and
duties given by middle-level management.

1.2 Expectations:
My expectations were that I will be put in a bureaucratic workplace full of computers and
electronic system. Surprisingly, the workplace was different from I what I expected. The
environment was totally but it did not stop from working and learning about the workplace. It
was a new experience, the environment was new and yet exotic. I had to be versatile and content
myself with what was at my disposal. Working in a green
environment just makes me realize how healthy it is to be breath the oxygen that was coming
from the trees and how harmless was the energy that was flowing around the place. I have
learned how to work in a green environment and how important it is for our health. By
embracing green and fresh air means at the workplace, employees can also benefit from good
health. There are indoor air pollutants that cause sick building syndrome, which translates into
frequent and unplanned absenteeism from work, allergy, and headache complaints. Spreading
plants around cubicles and ventilating the workplace can remove the harmful toxins and
allergens, keeping the office environment clean, green, and productive. Moreover, I had great
autonomy in performing tasks. I expected to do under control while doing my task but the reality
in the work field make me felt to be autonomous. I had that chance to choose which task to
perform and who
to work with. I felt very involved in the business process and I’m glad to be in such environment
of freedom.

1.3 Nature of industry developments:

The most important features and developments area in which I have worked is organic and
green products. Many organizations today act irresponsibly by producing products that come
from dangerous materials. It is not in their interest to look for where the material is coming
from or whether the material we are processing is harmless. Such organizations put money
first and make short tem profit. Unlike those organizations, the Sustainability project (NPC)
Pty focuses on developing green product so as to do no harm to the society and as well as
avoiding damaging the environment in which it operates. Thus, the use of any chemicals that
might affect the environment and customers are strictly banned from the business process.
The organization works on products that promote the sustainability of the environment.
Some of the activities are recycling plants, planting succuents so as to fight climate change
and protecting the nature.

1.4 Products markets:

The Sustainability project (NPC) Pty has two market products for its operations, Kelly’s
garden and Compost happens. Located in Pineland, Kelly’s Garden provides
customers with plants, herbs, organic foods, medicinal plants. In addition, it offers
drumming and piano courses at a very affordable price. The place is very welcoming and the
energy that flows around is positive at Kelly’s Garden. At compost happens, we provides
varieties of product such as fire woods, lawn dressing, potting soil, wood chips, mulch,
liquid compost, worms and other types of woods. The compost targets customers that are
more interesting in agriculture, gardens.

1.5 Organization-society connection:

There is a strong relationship between Sustainability Project Pty and the society in which it
operates. Unlike most companies who seek first profits, Sustainability Project Pty is a non-profit
organization with the purpose to serve primarily the community or the society interest. Meaning
that, the organization will act in a best way that benefit the society. Sustainability project Pty
activities focus on improving people’s life, creating a sustainable environment without
compromising future needs. The notion of corporate social responsibility prevails over the desire
to make profit for itself. Thus, the organization is entitled to take care of the environment in
which it operates. The organization is not driven by profit buy by dedication to a given cause
that is target of all income beyond what it takes to run an organization. Furthermore,
Sustainability project Pty is used for trusts, cooperatives, advocacy, charity and environmental
groups. Any surplus profits after operating expenses are used to further its goal instead of being
distributed between members of the organization.

1.6 Personal development

During my learning period, I had a great time and I have been working diligently. I was punctual
and I think the one thing that set apart from other was my versatility. That was my biggest
strength. I was able to adapt to the environment effortlessly which helped me to perform any
tasks without being bothered by my own values. I believe the reason why I was able to adapt
myself to any types of works that were given to me is the way I set mind. It all start within the
mind set and what you instil to your mind is what the body is likely to display. So I had to assert
that versatility into the body in order to perform whatever task was given. However, I was
rushing a bit from task to task when a
deadline for a specific task was given. Eventually, I managed to work out on that weakness and I
had to ask for the approval of my supervisor whether I could do the next task or not.

1.7 Handling conflicts between personal/organizational objects

Sometimes the learning objective can differ from the host organization duties. In everything, one
has to adapt himself or herself to the circumstances. Whenever conflicts arose between my
personal learning and the organization’s objective, I had to focus on the outcome not on duties. It
kept from losing the focus towards the host organization and avoid interferences before
performing any task. Sometimes I had to identify the bigger picture of what the organization is
trying to achieve rather than just questioning the importance of duties

1.8 Key skills development

The journey has been long but the skills acquired alongside is definitely useful for my future
venture. During my learning period, I have built skills such as: Effective communication,
leadership, trouble shooting, creativity and negotiation. To begin with, attending meetings has
really helped me improve my communication skills. This include knowing how to approach
people, create meaningful relationships with other participants. Secondly, negotiation has
contributed in building good skills of a negotiator in dealing with conflict. That ability to keep
parties involved towards a unified goal by talking nicely and softly so as to avoid hard feeling
was spotted on. By applying different negotiation styles, one can master the art of negotiating.
Leadership is another skill that has on spotlight during my learning period. Finally comes
creativity. We were also exposed to some situation where we had to come up with some creative
ideas on how best could we make the workplace more attractive.

1.9 Looking into the future

The experience and all the skills learned from the experiential learning has helped to prepare my
new venture. I have learned to embrace the virtue of entrepreneurship, how
one can become successful in the midst of uncertainty. I believe everything is possible, you can
create gold out of nothing as long as you stay focused and knowing what you want to achieve in
life will be that driving force behind your decision making. I will keep on learning continuously,
be enthusiastic because that’s the best way to approach it. I believe I have what it takes to be an
entrepreneur. Learning from Laurence and Kelly really game me some ideas on where to start
and hopefully I will be able to put all the pieces together.
