Swamps and Seas

All rivers that flow through valleys end up in the sea. The sea or ocean is a great
expanse of saltwater.

In Trinidad, some of our rivers pass through a special landform before they reach the
sea. This landform is called a swamp.
A swamp is a wetland that is dominated by shrubs and trees. Swamps are a bridge
between the land and the ocean. Some swamps in Trinidad are Caroni Swamp,
Nariva Swamp, and the Oropouche Lagoon

Peninsulas and Gulfs

Peninsulas are a narrow stretch of land surrounded on three sides by water. Two
major peninsulas found in Trinidad are the Cedros peninsula (Serpent’s mouth) and
the Chaguaramas peninsula (Dragon’s mouth).
On the north-western side of Trinidad, in the Chaguaramas (Dragon’s mouth)
area we find a body of water called the Gulf of Paria.

A gulf is a large area of sea or ocean partially enclosed by land. The lands that
partially enclose the Gulf of Paria are the peninsula of Cedros, the peninsula of
Chaguaramas and the coastline that lies between them.
