Student Reflection

Extraction and Recycling of Metals

GRASPS acronym task directions:

Goal: To create a product that raises awareness about metal extraction and recycling.
Role: Choose your role: a scientist, an environmentalist, a social welfare specialist, or an economist or somebody working for an organisation of your creation (ex: a car
manufacturer).
Audience: The general public
Situation: In today’s society, we have a greater need for metals. Unfortunately, some metals are becoming scarce and disposing of them can harm the environment.
That being the case, recycling metals seems more and more like a logical alternative.
Product: You will choose the best product to show your ideas. Your product can be a poster, presentation, video, podcast, essay or another idea (with teacher
approval).
Standards/Criteria: Criterion D - Reflecting on the Impacts of Science
My chosen form of presentation is a poster
Part I: Explaining extraction recycling processes
(strands i and iii and iv)

Question Information Website Link(s)

My chosen metal is

How is the metal I selected extracted and ●

processed for use?

How is the metal I selected recycled? ●

Part II: Discussion and evaluation of the implications of metal extraction and or recycling
(strands ii and iii and iv)

My chosen one-world factor to discuss is: Economic

Question Information Website Link(s)

One positive impact of extraction OR recycling of my ●

chosen metal on the factor is

The evidence I will use to support my claim is from a

relevant case study

One negative impact of extraction OR recycling of my ●

chosen metal on the factor is

The evidence I will use to support my claim is from a

relevant case study

A 3rd impact of extraction OR recycling of my chosen ●

metal on the factor is

The evidence I will use to support my claim is from a

relevant case study
In your evaluation, you should summarise the arguments you have made on the implications and make a clear judgement as to whether the
extraction and recycling of your selected metal has led to a better world i.e: is it sustainable?

Part III: Works Cited

(strand iv)

Take all of your links from the tables above and turn them into your works cited page using MLA Format. You can use www.mybib.com. Remember to put citations in
alphabetical order and have a “hanging indent”. You may use Stamford’s library website to help you write your works cited list.

In Grade 9, you will also need to include in-text OR parenthetical citations to show where each citation has been used within your project. If you are not submitting a
written format (e.g podcast), you will need to use “according to….” phrases within your presentation to reference to the source that you are referring to.
