TASK criterion D

Write an expository essay that explores one example of how

electromagnetism technology is used to solve a problem. The
essay should explore both the benefits and drawbacks of the
chosen use of electromagnetism.
GRASP:
Goal: To identify a problem that can be solved using electromagnetism
technology. Research on different examples where electromagnetism
technology is used to solve the problem.
Role: Science analyst/journalist
Apply the knowledge of electromagnetism and discuss how will you
science and technology to solve the real-life problem.
Audience: Your audience is based on how challenging is your problem
that you can solve and explain them using scientific language to either
MYP Year 2 or MYP Year 3
Situation: There can be simple or alternative solutions rather than using
complicated scientific principles of electromagnetism. Describe the
various implications of using electromagnetism and its application in
solving a specific problem that you have chosen interacting with at least
two factors (moral, ethical, social, economic, political, and environmental)
Product: Essay or Science journal or newspaper article. Make sure to
acknowledge or document the work of others and the sources of
information used. Your work will be uploaded on turn it in to check the
plagiarism.

Your essay should include:

a) A description of the problem that your electromagnetism
technology is used to solve.
b) An explanation of how your electromagnetism technology
is used to solve the problem.
c) A description of the benefits of your chosen use of
electromagnetism.
d) A description of the drawbacks of your chosen use of
electromagnetism.
e) Describe the various implications of using electromagnetism and its
application in solving a specific problem that you have chosen
interacting with at least two factors (moral, ethical, social, economic,
political, and environmental)

f) A recommendation as to whether this type of electromagnetism

technology should be used [do the benefits outweigh the
drawbacks?]
g) Word limit ranges from 700 to 1200.
SCIENTIFIC VOCABULARY:

Attract Unlike Current

Repel Protons Ions
Charge Electrons Ionised
Negative Induced charges Neutral
Positive Conductor Magnetic flux
Like Insulator attraction
repulsion Solenoid Magnetic field,

force North & south pole

At the end of year 5, students should be able to:
i. summarize the ways in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem or
issue
ii. describe
and summarize the various implications of using science and its application in
solving a specific problem or issue
iii. apply scientific language effectively
iv. document the work of others and sources of information used.
