What is the problem with plastics?

UNIT DETAILS
Unit number /
title: Organic chemistry
Unit questions:
1. What is the relationship between molecules in a homologous series
2. State 2 consequences of extraction and movement of crude oil
3. What is the relationship between monomers and polymers

SOI: Relationships between humans and their environment are often a

consequence of unequitable natural distribution or movement of natural
resources
Concepts: Consequences, energy, movement

TASK OUTLINE
Task Plastics are derived from materials found in nature. Most plastics are
introduction: made from hydrocarbons. Your task is to discuss why plastics are a
problem and explain a solution to the problem.
Goal: Explain to your grandparents the
problem that plastics are causing in the
environment and your solution for that
problem. You have 60 seconds for
your explanation!
Role: You are a passionate marine
conservationist worried about the harm
the plastics have on the ocean.
Audience: . Grandparent generation
Situation: When your grandparents were young
plastics were not used very much,
instead glass or other alternatives were
used. Your grandparents think that
plastics are amazing but you know
better. You must use scientific
evidence to explain to them why
plastics are a problem and explain a
solution for the problems.
Product: 60 second speech that explains the
problem and solution. You must
research the key problems for your
explanation and provide one possible
best solution. You will write the script.
Make sure you cite your sources on a
piece of paper to hand in
