Command Terms. Apply: Use knowledge and understanding in response to a given situation or real circumstances. Construct: Display information in a
diagrammatic or logical form Describe: Give a detailed account or picture of a situation, event, pattern or process. Document: Credit sources of information used
by referencing (or citing) following a recognized referencing system. References should be included in the text and also at the end of the piece of work in a
reference list or bibliography. Outline: Give a brief account or summary. State: Give a specific name, value or other brief answer without explanation or
calculation. Summarize: Abstract a general theme or major point(s).

Interacting factors (Dii)

Cultural factor: Patterns of knowledge, behaviour, beliefs, shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterize groups of people
Economical factor: Production, distribution, and use of income, wealth, and commodities
Environmental factor: Circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded
Ethical factor: Process of rational inquiry to decide on issues as right or wrong, as applied to the people and their actions
Moral factor: Principles of right or wrong behaviour derived from a particular society
Political factor: Relates to government or public affairs
Social Factor: Interactions between groups of people involving issues such as welfare, safety, rights, justice or class
THE INTELLIGENT PLANT (READING & ANALYSIS)

1) Before doing the reading, in your portfolio using only black/blue pen or a pencil, construct a word bank including the
following words: beguiling, mashup, seeping, whim, stomping, stymied, become wary of, recklessly, homologous,
neurotransmitter, murky, synapse, teleology, anthropomorphizing, animism, telekinetic, swarm, sped-up, ruthlessly, leery,
tannins, contentious

2) Print the article made by Michael Pollan published on The New Yorker on 2013 called The Intelligent Plant: Scientists
debate a new way of understanding flora. On each paragraph underline maximum one sentence to state the principal
idea of the paragraph

3) Watch at the following video about graphic organizers from minute1:57 to minute 4:18.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSDVRHQYZfA&feature=emb_logo&ab_channel=Visme

4) (Di, Diii) Summarize the article in a graphic organizer which can be a spider map or idea web. Do your graphic
organizer by hand using black/blue pen or a pencil. Remember always to use proper scientific language

5) (Dii, Diii, Div) Describe and summarize in minimum 350 words (there is no maximum) how the debate about plant
intelligence may influence any cultural , economical, environmental, ethical, moral political or social factor. To do so
you need to:

 Look at the factor definitions at the end of page 1 of this document.

 Include at least 3 reliable sources and document them in text and in a final reference list. The Pollan article
given in this activity can be include as a source.

 Check this video in case you do not know how to document in text citations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=hhD4xaGAcRs&ab_channel=Scribbr

 You can use the document Effective Citing and Referencing (attached to this activity) to reference different
sources in APA. In specific the pages 16 and 17 may help you with that.

Only for advanced learners!

 Only if you want to know more about this topic the articles of Alpi et al., 2007 and the Response to Alpi et al., will give
you more information about this debate.

 Have in mind that those are very advanced texts, ask a Science teacher if you decide to read those documents to guide you
in the debate
