BROADSHEET: A COLORFUL TAPESTRY OF REALITY AND ENTERTAINMENT

As someone who loves to spend free time reading and watching the news with my
family, particularly my grandparents, I was excited about this task. In the present, only few
individuals still purchase physical newspapers due to the availability of digital news.
However, my grandparents find these newspapers to be leisure time. That's why I initially
thought this task would be uncomplicated. Little did I know how difficult it is to write an
article. Despite its brief length, an article contains an immense amount of factual data that
should be understandable. If writing an article alone is difficult like putting a thread in a
needle, imagine creating an entire broadsheet.

Personally, I see broadsheets as tapestries embroidered with different designs that

show real figures and entertaining symbols. But technically speaking, a newspaper is a
printed material that compiles different types of articles and entertainment sections that
inform and entertain people. In this project, we need to create a broadsheet that contains
different sections that a typical newspaper has. Preparing for this task was challenging,
considering all group members were not part of the journalism club during elementary and
high school. As a solution, I thought of buying a gazette as a guide. By doing this, I learned
how reports are written and observed the placement of sections in the newspaper. I also
visited a variety of reliable online sources, such as the Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin,
Rappler, and Philippine Daily Inquirer. These sources served as a sewing pattern that helped
me gather data and check for the relevance and validity of the tapestry on progress. This
part of the process made me realize that fact-checking is undeniably necessary when doing
an article, as it helps us avoid fallacious data that could negatively impact people who will
read the material.

Aside from reliable digital news sources, one well-known journalist, Kara David, also
helped me construct my news articles. With the help of her educational vlogs, I garnered
different tips on how to write news leads and arrange information in a news article. There are
available educational videos on YouTube that also guided me to write my articles effectively.
After listing all these tips, I outlined each article. This practice of mine started in high school.
I made outlines for my reports, reflection papers, essays, and other school projects. As a
result, I knew where to put the ideas I gathered and ended up working effortlessly. Also, an
outline is the backbone of a text; if there’s a need for correction, we can immediately go back
to our outline to check where to improve or reconstruct. Doing this was not a piece of cake,
so I asked for assistance from my groupmates. Honestly, my group established a
collaborative environment. It was like working with different seamstresses who aimed to
create a beautiful piece of art. Everyone was participative in sharing what they knew about
something with the group. Each member had the initiative to get the task assigned and was
willing to share links to various websites containing helpful information about sports, current
events, and entertainment. They were also not hesitant to share their insights about our
work, giving opinions on how we could improve our writing, and were also able to navigate
grammatical errors in the text.

Among all the processes undertaken during this project, newspaper layout is
undeniably the most challenging. Like placing the design in a dress to make the shape more
pleasing, putting the appropriate article in its right position is also difficult. The focal point of
the newspaper should contain the most relevant material available. This section should
immediately pique the interest as it is where the eyes of the audience land first. Other parts,
such as the editorial and entertainment, should also be catchy because it serves as a break
from all the information bombarded in the paper. The materials in the google classroom and
newspaper layout examples available on the internet helped our group with this concern.
Buying an actual copy of the newspaper also gave us an idea how to layout the paper.
Different options of layout provided us a wider perspective on how we will design our own
broadsheet.

Without a doubt, this process has been challenging yet overflowing with realizations.
During this activity, I realized that writing takes an immense amount of work. The process of
producing these articles is extremely technical and specific. Aside from learning their styles,
we must also determine if it is relevant, time-bound, valid, reliable, and compelling. For these
reasons, I even more appreciate the efforts of people working in this industry. The aspiration
of daily providing us with current events to keep us updated and entertained in the bat of an
eye is underrated. That’s why even though this process has been like threading a needle, I
still did my best as an appreciation to those people putting in their best effort to make the
colorful tapestry that covers both reality and entertainment.
