GUIDELINES
1. Students from Nursery to Class IX are eligible to participate.
2. The Vedic Mantras and the Thirukkurals chosen for the competition are listed
in the booklet.
3. Students can participate in both Vedic Mantra chanting and Thirukkural
Recitation competitions or in any one of them.
4. Each school will hold the preliminary round at their own premises.
5. Schools can send a maximum of Five participants in each group for the finals
of Vedic Mantra Chanting and Thirukkural Recitation Competitions.
6. The finals of the competition will be held on 20th January 2024 (Saturday) at
D.A.V. Girls Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Chennai – 600 086.
7. Renowned Vedic scholars and Tamil scholars will be the judges for the Final
Vedic Mantra Chanting and Thirukkural Recitation competitions respectively.
8. Portions for the competitions are specified below.

Om ritancha satyancha-abheed-dhaat tapaso-dhaya-jaayata |


tato raatrya-jaayata tatah samudro arnavah ||

This movable and immovable world was created by the Almighty. He also
created night (Pralaya, i.e. after each cycle of creation, there follows a grand
dissolution of all created things, resulting in complete darkness wherein the
world temporarily ceases to exist) When this prolonged period of dissolution
comes to an end, new cycle of creation begins, with atomic particles
accumulating in one big ocean-like mass.

Om samudraa-darna-vaadadhi samvatsaro ajaayata |


aho-raatraani vidadhad-vishwasya mishato vashee ||

The accumulated particles in one big ocean-like mass, combine in their own
way, resulting in the formation of the stars, planets and other celestial bodies,
and these begin to rotate in their own orbits. This rotation causes the concept
of Time to be born. God, the Controller of this entire process, as if without effort,
causes this Time to be divided into day and night.

Om sooryaa-chandra-masau dhaataa yathaa poorvama-kalpayat |
divam-cha prithiveem-cha-antariksham-atho swaha ||

In this cycle of creation, God created the sun, moon, earth and sky, and all the
natural elements like air, fire, and water, and all life-forms. These He created
exactly as He did in past creations, and as He would do in future ones, too.

In the eastern direction, we discover the supreme presence of Agni, the source
of light and knowledge. He protects us in different ways by sending us arrow-
like rays from the sun. We bow to all. Some may have ill-feeling towards us; or
we may have the same towards them; we leave it to up to You to provide justice.

Om dakshina dig indro-dhi-pati-stirash-chi-raajee rakshitaa pitara ishavah |

yosmaan dweshti yam vayam dwhishmastam wo jambhe dadhmaha ||

In southern direction, we discover the supreme presence of Indra, the giver of


prosperity. He protects us in different ways by helping us learn through
righteous parents and teachers. We bow to all. Some may have ill-feeling
towards us; or we may have the same towards them; we leave it to up to You to
provide justice.

In the western direction, we discover the supreme presence of Varuna, the


greatest of all. He protects us in different ways by providing us nutritious food.
We bow to all. Some may have ill-feeling towards us; or we may have the same
towards them; we leave it to up to You to provide justice.

In the northern direction, we discover the supreme presence of Soma, the


creator of the universe. He protects us in different ways by removing our
obstacles. We bow to all. Some may have ill-feeling towards us; or we may have
the same towards them; we leave it to up to You to provide justice.

In the lower direction, we discover the supreme presence of Vishnu, the


omnipresent. He protects us in different ways by providing us trees, plants and
vegetation. We bow to all of them. Some may have ill-feeling towards us; or we
may have the same towards them; we leave it to up to You to provide justice.

In the upper direction, we discover the supreme presence of Brihaspati, the


Lord of great powers. He protects us in different ways by providing us water
(rain). We bow to all of them. Some may have ill-feeling towards us; or we may
have the same towards them; we leave it to up to You to provide justice.

Leaving aside the dazzling everyday world, may my soul realize You, the
Almighty who is devoid of all darkness and is the source of all knowledge and
wisdom. O God! Please protect us.

pray to You to show us the right path and bless us with mental strength; may
we be able to realize You with utmost devotion. Swaahaa! Yes, indeed, this is
the truth!

Oh God, Our well-wisher and the Giver of knowledge. May we see and learn for
hundred years; May we live a healthy life for hundred years; May we listen to
scholars for hundred years; May we speak softly and always the truth for
hundred years; May we live a happy meaningful life for hundred years and
indeed even beyond that.

Oh Source of life. Remover of Sorrow, Giver of Happiness! We meditate
upon You, who created this Universe and is the source of all knowledge and
bliss. We pray that You guide our Intelligence on to the right path.

knowledge; the spirit of glory, nourishment and vitality; Giver of justice; One
who liberates us from evils and ailments.

vitality. We, your children, seek your blessings and prosperity.

wisdom; protect us; shower us with fertile land, cows, and knowledge
equipping us with effective means of transport and communication. May we all

Utoditaa maghavant-suryasya vayam devaanaam sumatau syaama ||

Oh Almighty! May we be happy and prosperous now at this very moment,


during the day and at the end of the day, i.e. at all times - both present and
future. May we have the company of noble souls and may we make all efforts to
fulfil our goals.

both when I am awake and during my sleep. May this mind, which is the unique

The various spokes in a wheel are connected to its centre, i.e. nave of the wheel.
Similarly, knowledge of all four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva) is
intrinsically connected to our mind. May our mind be purified by adopting the
true dharma. May this mind be full of beautiful thoughts and firm resolutions.

Om Su-shaarathi-rashwaan-iva yan-manushayaan-ne-neeyate-bhee

Hrit-prathishtham yada-jiram javishtham tanme manah

The mind drives all our actions, similar to a skillful charioteer that controls the
horses by pulling on its reins. This mind resides within us, is free from old
age, and is extremely fast. May this mind be full of beautiful thoughts and firm
resolutions.
