1.0 INTRODUCTION

In contrast to typical mainstream media, such as printed material or audio recordings,


which display little to no interaction between users, multimedia is a medium of communication
that uses a mixture of various content forms such as text, sound, images bitmap, graphics, or
video into a single interactive presentation. Multimedia also includes the basic components of
software, hardware, and other technologies, as well as the principles and applications of
effective interactive communication.

The most prevalent way of communication is through words and symbols, whether
spoken or written. Text plays an important role in multimedia menus, navigation systems, and
content. It is the simplest and frequently most effective approach to convey a message.
Inadequate attention to the presentation and text flow inside a multimedia application might
result in the failure to communicate the presentation's main message. Text has typically been
used to convey messages. Text is an excellent way to deliver information, but it is often too
slow to convey the message. If you only have 3 seconds to capture someone's attention, text
will not suffice.

Furthermore, graphics can convey messages quickly. Compare a printed table of sales
figures to a graphic of the same figures; the graphic immediately shows the trends. A picture
can be worth a thousand words if used correctly to convey your message.

Finally, the next component is images. For example, while you may write pages to
describe your product, nothing matches a full-color image. Full-color photographs can also
serve as backdrops for text and graphics.

2.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE POSTER DESIGN

BookXcess founders Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng founded Big Bad Wolf Books in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2009. Making books more inexpensive and accessible to
everyone is the main goal. The World's Biggest Book Sale encourages people of all
ages to discover the joys of reading, motivate them to follow their aspirations, and
empower them with the knowledge to achieve them.

The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale offers the largest range of English books at 90% savings,
allowing readers to try new authors and genres. The Sale has science-fiction, thrillers,
literature, business, cookery, art and design, children's books, and many other sought-
after books to fit everyone's demands. Their objective is “to empower people to learn
knowledge and foster the reading habit and undoubtedly, the joy of reading,” according
to their founders.

According to the poster, the event would take place at MIECC @ The Mines Kuala
Lumpur from 22 December to 2 January 2023. Orange and black are the traditional
tones used for the Big Bad Wolf's posters. As we previously indicated, Big Bad Wolf
typically offers discounts of 90%, but this advertisement indicates that they are now
offering discounts of 95% on all merchandise.

2.2 ELEMENTS USED IN POSTER’S DESIGN

• Colour

This poster uses bright tones such as orange, black, and white. Orange and black are
usually used as the main colour of the logo on every poster they have made. Despite
the poster's use of a straightforward and simple colours, consumers are aware that it
is their brand.

• Vector And Bitmap Graphics

The next element that can be found in the poster is, they used vector graphics and
bitmap images to create visual elements such as logos, pictures, and illustrations.
Based on our evaluation, the wolf graphic, and towers in the centre of the poster was
designed using vector graphics.

• Text

After that, this poster utilised text effectively to market the services given by the event.
For instance, the “The Wolf Howls Again” indicates that this poster is gaining people’s
attention about their upcoming event, especially for book lovers. The poster used a
creative phrase and easily read fonts. The objective of the larger font size is to attract
the attention of the intended audience and make the poster's message readable.

• Layer

Layers facilitate that the management and organisation of complicated designs by


dividing a large design into portions containing related components. Using its opacity
and blending style choices, layers enable the creation of unique effects. These choices
affect how a layer will mix with its layers. Based on the poster's combination of lines,
images, and text graphics in one space, we can determine that layers are used for
editing, such as the graphic of the wolf image and towers behind the wolf indicates
that the poster used few of layers. To ease editing, they must use layers so that the
poster does not appear unorganized or out of sync.

• Image Format

Typically, JPG and PNG are used for poster formats. JPG’s colour depth is 24 bits,
meanwhile, PNG's is lower. To obtain the highest quality for the advertisement poster,
the jpg format was applied. Additionally, the poster's colours are complementary, and
its elements are distinguishable.

2.3 STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE POSTER

2.3.1 Strengths

The platform used to promote the poster has been a great benefit to them. The
platform used is, through social media which is Facebook application. Facebook is an
application that is usually used by various age of readers. The poster will then catch
their attention and join the upcoming event to get their exclusive price of books.

The poster also stated that this event also provided useful details for the customers,
especially readers about the place, date, and time of the event. This would make it
easier for people to reach the destination of the event using the information given in
the poster. This is because, the target customer comes from various places, not only
in Kuala Lumpur. The event will be held at other strategic places such as Singapore,
Indonesia and more.

The text on the poster is of a size and style that makes it simple for any range of age
to read and understand. Even though the title is smaller than the location of the event,
people still aware that the poster is about Big Bad Wolf event, mostly among readers.
This is because, the event is one of the biggest book events that is frequently held in
Asia. Most people who love to read, would already know what the poster is about just
by looking at the wolf graphic.

2.3.2 Weaknesses

However, the poster also contains weaknesses such as the small size of title. This
might be confusing for the new upcomers who does not have any awareness about
the event. Thus, the poster’s title and phrase do not accurately portray the event’s
purpose, which would make some people confuses and lose their attention.

Furthermore, the fonts of texts that are used in the poster are all in same style. This
would make the poster less attractive and bland to some people. They would not be
attracted to know more about the event or the information that have been provided,
hence making them ignore the poster. The colour palette of the texts is also less
appealing as it is quite mediocre, which is of only average quality and not very good.
It will also turn out to be boring to certain people.

3.0 SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE POSTER VALUE

First of all, the ways to improve this poster value is to choose appropriate and
suitable phrases that would influence people and make it more understandable. This
is because, the poster should also expand their target customer, not solely to readers
or book lovers, but to people who are still unaware of the event. The poster should
also convince and encourage more people to read and know the benefit of reading.
The event is one of the way, people could buy various genre of books with affordable
prices without have to spend a lot of money.

Next, in order to gain the attention of the people they want to reach, they need
to make a platform which users can easily reach and buy their books. This is because,
not everyone is from big city such as Kuala Lumpur. There is also book lovers who
love to read and often collect books but cannot come to the event because of the
destination is located far from their places. If the event is available on online platform,
more people would partake the event and buy more books at any time anywhere,
despite the event is held at only one place.

Lastly, the poster should also use variety and more inviting fonts to attract more
customers. The font used in a poster greatly influences the appearance of the design.
The fonts handle a lot of the work in defining the organization's style because the
words on a poster are what truly teach the viewer about the event. This is due to the
fact that a well-designed poster can have a significant impact on readers, who typically
have high expectations and will remember the event if the poster made a positive
impression on them. The variation of fonts can enhance the poster’s value of design
as it can make it more attractive and please the eyes of the readers.

4.0 ANOTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM THAT CAN BE USED

Instagram is yet another social media site that may be used to market and
publicise the poster. This is due to the fact that Instagram has a sizable user base that
is actively involved. Instagram boasts more than 800 million active users at the
moment, and this figure is only going to continue to rise, which is a bigger amount of
users than Facebook. This indicates that there is a sizable audience that could
potentially patronise their company on the platform. Through advertisements on
Instagram, the event would have the opportunity to reach new customers, as it is
completely personalised and trackable. They may collect useful user data, link to the
event’s website, and target certain demographics using this social media marketing
strategy. This information can then be used to inform their other social media
marketing initiatives.

Another social media that can be used to promote the event and the poster is
on Twitter. Using Twitter Ads, they can connect with people who are not yet familiar
with their event and market their goods and services to people who will probably be
interested or curious in what the event has to offer.
They can also develop an advertising campaign that would be suitable for the
company's growth goals by making use of the numerous ad types that are available.
These ads all have distinct campaign objectives. Furthermore, most people nowadays
use twitter as their main entertainment of social media. The advertisement of the
poster will then gain the attention of these people, mainly readers as they are easily
intrigued.
