SOCIAL NETWORKING

Good afternoon. Before I begin, I’d like to ask you a question. How many of you have social
media? How many of you have before or during this class used it?
We all or almost all of us have social networks. Well, today I want to talk about social networks.

First, I would like to talk about what are the origin and evolution of social networks.
Secondly, I am going to talk about what social networks are.
Finally, I’d like to talk about the positive and negative aspects of social networks.

So, we start with the first point: the origin and evolution of social networks
Classmates are considered the first social network. It was created in 1995 by the American
Randy Conrad. This social network sought to connect in a virtual way to former college and
university colleagues.
In 2003 LinkedIn was created, a social work network to search for, recommend or offer a job. In
2003 MySpace was also created, this network was dedicated to music and technology. In 2009,
MySpace was the social network with the highest user traffic. In 2004, Facebook came into
being. In 2005, the YouTube video platform was created. Twitter appeared in 2006. Instagram
was created in 2010, allowing video and photo sharing. WhatsApp was created in 2014. One of
the latest developments in social networks is Tik-Tok, a platform of Chinese origin that allows
creating and sharing of videos.

Now I would like to go to the second point. What are social networks?
Social networks are digital platforms formed by communities of individuals with common
interests, activities, or relationships (such as friendship, kinship, and work). Social networks
allow contact between people and function to communicate and exchange information.

Finally, I would like to talk about the positive and negative aspects of social networks
Positive aspects of social networks
They are immediate: Social networks work in real-time. The information, videos, images, and
opinions that are shared on the networks are usually made public and can be known by any user
of the network at almost any point of the globe immediately
Shorten distances: Social networks allow you to communicate with friends, family, and any
network user regardless of geographic distance.
Increase brand visibility: Connect buyers and sellers from all over the world.
They function as a channel of learning, entertainment, and information: Social networks
function to virilize certain information. Depending on the context in which the user is interested,
you can learn, entertain, or inquire.
Allow information sharing: Networks allow file sharing easily: documents, music,
photographs, and videos.
They provide job opportunities: There are networks that allow making known the job profile
of users and were created with the specific objective of forming professional communities.

Negative aspects of social networks

Cyberbullying: It is one of the main risks of social networks and occurs when an individual or
group of individuals harasses or harasses another through social networks. This can occur
through insults, and the virtualization of private information, among other forms.
Indiscriminate access to sensitive content: There is sexual or violent content on the networks,
which is often inadequate, especially for vulnerable social groups such as children.
Abuse in the use of social networks: Excessive use of social networks can lead to loss of
contact with the tangible world and lead to addiction.

In conclusion, social media will continue to evolve over time and will likely continue to help us
stay connected to each other, learn about current events, and share the good things in our lives.
They can be used for good as easily as they can be used to cause harm, which is why we must
use them responsibly.
