General Description of the FSTD

The Diamond Aircraft Simulator is a fixed base, non-collimated 3-channel visual, flight and
navigational procedure trainer (FNPT) according to EASA rules, or flight training device
(FTD) according to FAA rules. The instructor station (IOS box) is enclosed and isolated from
the outside environment. All computers are contained into a rack that can be located in either
sides of the IOS box. The projectors are mounted on an aluminum structure by means of
high precision projector mounts than can be adjusted along 3 rotational axes.

The simulator is controlled via two touch screen monitors allocated in the IOS box. A
keyboard and trackball or mouse are also available.

Data and Simulation

The design and validation specifications for the Diamond FSTD are carefully defined taking
into account the intended use of the device.

For the initial qualification of the FSTD, validation data are used. They are presented in the
Reference Data Report document. They are derived from a Diamond specific airplane within
the represented class of airplane (SEP or MEP), or they are based on information from the
Airplane Flight Manual or Engineering reports supporting the data.

In some cases, a subjective evaluation of the pilot can be used (EASA) to support the use of
certain validation data (force sweeps in cruise, for instance).

REV. 7 Chapter 3 Page 3-5

Electrical system
The FSTD has a 5V DC, 24V DC and 230V AC electrical system. The server rack is supplied
by 230V AC and provides 5V DC, 24V DC and 230V AC to the simulator system, the
computers and the projectors.

A Simulator Start Switch and a Main (Emergency) Switch are available. The Simulator Start
switch is located on the front side of the server rack and is used to provide the simulator with
electrical power. The red Main Switch is located on the right side of the server rack and is
used to cut the power to the server rack for long term storage and for emergency reasons.

Refer to chapters 3.5, 3.6, 17 for the description of the Simulator Start and Shutdown.

WARNING: IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY SWITCH THE MAIN SWITCH TO

THE OFF-POSITION TO CUT THE TOTAL ELECTRICAL POWER
SUPPLY.

CAUTION: THE MAIN SWITCH MUST NOT BE USED FOR NORMAL

SIMULATOR SHUTDOWN. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE
COMPUTER SYSTEM AND THE PROJECTOR SYSTEM.

Page 3-6 Chapter 3 REV. 7

Computer System
The server rack is equipped with computers in different configurations.

Valid for Global Canvas Visual systems

The server rack is equipped with 4 computers:

• HOST Computer
The HOST computer provides the simulation software and the IOS Interface for the
Instructors
• Three Visual computers
Each Visual computer provides one channel for the visual simulation and supplies the
appropriate projector. VIS1 provides the Center Cannel. VIS2 provides the right-hand
projector with the left-hand picture on the visual screen. VIS3 provides the left-hand
projector with the right-hand picture on the visual screen.

The computers are automatically supplied with electrical power after the Start Switch is
turned on. A full-automatic shutdown sequence is triggered by the IOS software by pressing

The Control Loading System (CLS) is used to provide pilots with realistic flight control forces
in the flight simulator. The CLS takes inputs from pilot / copilot via the control stick and
rudder pedals and provide computed outputs for the pilot / copilot and the simulator.

Three red colored CLS emergency buttons (EPO) are in place to protect pilot and co-pilot
from injuries and system damages in case of a CLS defect. Two emergency buttons are
located in the floor room of the pilot and copilot. The third CLS emergency button is located
on the Flight Instructor Workstation (FIWS) between the monitors. To shut down the control
loading system motors, press at least one of the emergency buttons. To (re-)activate the
CLS all three emergency buttons need to be pulled out. Information about the status of the
CLS can be found in the System Information window in the IOS software.

WARNING: THIS CLS SYSTEM CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY

THROUGH MOVING PARTS. DURING INITIALISATION ENSURE
THAT THE COCKPIT IS UNCREWED.

APPLY EMERGENCY STOP BUTTONS IN CASE OF

UNEXPECTED CONTROL MOVEMENTS BY THE CLS

Note: At every Activation, the CLS executes an automatic calibration

sweeping the control sticks and pedals to their maximum
deflection. If the calibration sequence is interrupted or the
sweep disturbed the CLS limits will be out of tolerance and a
restart of the CLS will be required.

ICING - Light, Medium, Severe

Figure 8-16: Icing section

The Icing section is located on the Weather page 2/2.

Three predefined ICING buttons are used to set LIGHT, MEDIUM or SEVERE icing. Icing on
the aircraft nacelle will happen if the OAT is within the range of +2° up to minus 10°C and
De-Ice and Pitot Heat is switched to off. Activate Icing conditions by pressing the LIGHT,
MEDIUM or SEVERE button, the button turns green. Deactivate icing by pressing the green
colored button.

LIGHT or MEDIUM or SEVERE green colored: Icing active

LIGHT or MEDIUM or SEVERE white colored: Icing deactivated

The Airplane nacelle accumulates LIGHT, MEDIUM or SEVERE amount of ice in predefined
time, changes the mass of the airplane and therefore influences the flight characteristics. As
soon the De-Ice function in the cockpit is switched on, the aircraft nacelle stops collecting ice
and depending on the De-Ice setting in the cockpit and the icing setting on the IOS (Light,
Medium and Severe), the mass of the aircraft and the flight characteristics will go back to
normal conditions.

The Pitot tube accumulates LIGHT, MEDIUM or SEVERE amount of ice in predefined time
and the airspeed will drop accordingly. As soon the pitot heat function in the cockpit is
switched ON, the Pitot tube unlocks and ice does not build up anymore, independent of the
icing setting on the IOS (Light, Medium and Severe), therefore no airspeed drop is
experienced.
