AISSCE ROLL NO. -
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

CHALLENGES FACED BY THE SOCIALLY AND PHYSICALLY

DISADVANTAGED PEOPLE

In the play ‘ON THE FACE OF IT’ by Susan Hill

we see the difference of attitude of Mr. Lamb
and Derry who were both physically
challenged. Mr. Lamb accept life as it is and
runs for its positive side where as Derry had
developed a sense of bitterness in his heart
and mind which has hidden his flame of
sensitivity and positivity and started hating
himself.
Action Plan/Steps for the Project

An action plan is a detailed plan outline actions needed to

reach one or more goals. It can be defined as “a sequence
to steps that must be taken, or activities that must be
performed well, for a strategy to succeed.” In order to
compile my research work, the following steps were
followed:
1. First I chose a topic of my interest.
2. Then I thought of my topic thoroughly and worked on
the subheadings.
3. Next I set goals and decided to work on my plan of action

4. Then I researched about my topic and understood the topic

thoroughly by visiting various websites. I read a lot of
articles and reports to get to know about my topic in
details.
5. My guide Mrs. Anita Naidu conducted several zoom
meetings and assisted me to complete the project.
6. Finally I complied all my findings and research works in the
form of this report.
QUESTIONNAIRE
Here are lists of questions collected from different interviews of
Javed Abidi and his response:-

 “How did you involved in the disability and disadvantaged

awareness?”
He answered in 1993, he started
working for Sonia Gandhi,
creating and building the Rajiv
Gandhi Foundation’s Disabilities
Unit. A year later, he joined a
small advocate group called the
Disability and Disadvantaged
Rights Group and started raising
awareness for disadvantaged
people of India. Large pro-
disability rights movement arose, with the goal of getting the Parliament
of India to implement a bill of rights for disabled people.

 “What challenges have you faced while working against child

labor?”
To this he replied his greatest challenges were to establish socially and
physically disadvantaged people as denial of human rights and an evil,
fighting against people’s mindset has also caused violent reactions
leading to attacks from several mafia groups

 “Do you think you can create a cross-disability movement?”

He replied by saying that he is very optimistic and he can achieve and he
will see with his own eyes.
 “What advice would you like to give the youth who want to
become social activists against cross-disability movement?”
Our youth is very impatient
and intolerant as we have
failed to inculcate the
values of peace and
nonviolence yet among
them are some people who
are idealistic and want a
better life globally
recognizing them and
giving them a voice,
awaking them their own leader and pioneer is important he replied.

 “Some people think India has more problems to be countered,

so in this case why we should look towards disadvantaged and
disabled peoples?”

Am I not an Indian? Am I begging for something? What I am saying is the

rights and facilities that other people are getting like going to school,
going to park, watching cinema in theater etc; the same rights are also
mine & I’m fighting for my rights. Then don’t talk about such human
rights & democracy, he replied.

 “What is the overall opinion of government towards physically &

socially disadvantaged and disabled people?”
He replied, the attitude of the government toward such group of people is
“largely negative”. One approach to negative perception, the socio-
cognitive model of stigmatization, states that when compared to
emotional or social disabilities, attitude towards individual with such
disabilities are more favorable. There is lack of political will.
 “Some people think that those who are disable their
ancestors have done some sins, what is your comment?”
From last 10 years there is a decrease in polio cases so what does that
mean there sins are decreasing. These represent there mindset and their
background. These illogical thoughts make the society insensitive
towards those individual who are physically and socially disabled and
disadvantaged.

 “What is your view on education towards such individuals?”

He replied, in our country there are more than 300 governmental
universities, tell me one university where a person with such
disability
can easily with respect achieve his studies?? There is no such
university and this is out of my mind. There are a lot of things that can
be changed with stroke of a pen & why this country is not able to do
that till now.

 “What is the thing that has to be written in pen in order to

change the country?”
He replied, the Education Minster on India should pass an amendment
that within 5-7 years all the institution need to be disable friendly
otherwise their recognition of UGC would be withdraw or cancelled. If
today they withdraw their recognition, they won’t have any self
esteem and no parents would send their children’s to them.

 “What are the statistics towards the disadvantaged and disabled

people?”
We asked over 100 reputed companies of India that do you have employees as disabled individuals and if yes
then how many? They said the average rate of employment was only 0.4% not even half; the avg rate of
employment for public sector was 0.5%. So the country and economist and financial wizards decide on one
side there are nearly 5-6 cores disadvantaged people, are they suppose to sit in their homes or work for
themselves and contribute towards the country.

CONCLUSION
The fast changing socio-economic scenario in the country and its impact
on urbanization, industrialization and modernization of the economy has
resulted in increasing trends of rural-urban drift in search of livelihood
leading to a strain on the already limited urban facilities, resulting in
serious problems of over-crowding, increase in slum dwellers,
unemployment, poverty etc.

All these factors have exposed the vulnerable and the disadvantage to the
increasing incidence of social deviance and maladjustment. In keeping
view of this the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken
several initiatives to protect the rights of the disabled. Several legislative
measures have initiated for the rehabilitation and empowerment of
certain categories of disability (equal opportunities, protection of rights
and full participation act) 1995.

Always treat people with disabilities as equals. Never to be afraid,

skeptical or embarrassed to approach someone with a disability. Few
people may suffer from lack of self esteem and confidence. Remember
many of them don’t like sympathy and don’t stare at them. Always make
eye contact while talking to them and do not try to strike up a
conversation around their condition. People with disabilities have a right
to privacy. They are not obligated to tell you about their disability.
