Text One
Coming of age was really important for me, all the more so because I could finally vote in general elections. I’ve
always been really concerned about current affairs, and I’ve been following the news from various sources and
observing the social media profiles of several politicians for quite a while. It may not seem like an interesting thing
to do, but it has actually given me the opportunity to see stories from different sides and has allowed me to form
my own opinion on many issues. It takes some time, that’s true, but at least now I’m certain I’ll cast my vote for the
best person. The notion that some people don’t know who they are voting for is actually beyond my understanding.
Text two
Last summer, Manchester was hit by a terrible heatwave. I was working in a public space with no air conditioning,
and I was tired of having my shoulder-length hair dripping with sweat at the end of every shift. I wanted to have my
hair cut at my regular hairdresser’s, but she was fully booked till the end of the month. There was, however, a new
hair salon not far from my flat and I decided to give it a go. Upon entering, I immediately noticed that the place was
very different from what I was used to. The walls were quite dark, and cosmetic articles like sprays, wax and other
stuff were in flasks that looked like magic potions. The hairdresser was a big, tall man with a huge beard, some
decorative chains around his neck and wrists, and strong, tattooed arms. I visibly hesitated, but he invited me in...
‘Well, here it goes!’ I thought, and having explained what I wanted, I let the man do my hair. To my amazement,
he worked really quickly and decisively and the haircut was not only great but also really comfortable. Needless to
say, I’m a regular there now.

Man: And on today’s Find Your Opportunity let’s welcome Susan Green. Susan has recently been in London on
a three-month summer internship programme for graduates. Can you tell us something more about it,
Susan?
Woman: Of course. Let me start off by saying that I had always dreamed of going to Great Britain and living there.
I’m quite fascinated by the royals and English tea and all those things that make the British, well… British.
Studying there was not an option for me for many reasons, but when I graduated, I came up with the idea
of working there during the summer, and I found a great website that offers lots of different opportunities
for people like me. So I just browsed it, found a job that suited me and applied. You can imagine my joy
when I found out I had been accepted.
Man: And what kind of work did your position in the company involve?
Woman: Well, I’m a finance and accounting graduate and I actually worked in my area of expertise for a medium-
sized company based in West London. During the first week, they told me a lot about the company – I got
to know all the departments and many of my colleagues, which was fantastic. You can imagine how terrified
I was before my first day, but all my co-workers turned out to be really welcoming and supportive. And
after that I started working with a team. I was mainly doing spreadsheet calculations and with time
I started preparing some minor financial reports for my manager. I was able to put my theoretical university
knowledge into practice, so I really enjoyed it and I learned plenty in the process. I should probably also
mention that I had a mentor, who checked if I was doing my job correctly and gave me more challenging
tasks as I progressed.
Man: And how did you manage to find accommodation in London?
Woman: In fact I didn’t have to look for it, as it was all arranged by my company. There was a person dedicated to
the relocation of new employees and interns, and she contacted me about a month before my arrival.
We discussed all the options and she gave me some great tips concerning life in London. I was
accommodated in a studio flat together with another colleague, and although it was quite small, I didn’t
have any reasons to complain, especially since my flatmate was really sociable and we got on well really
quickly. I also had a season ticket paid for by my employer, so I was able to use practically all means of
public transport, including buses, the Tube and even some boat services. Thanks to that, I was able to see
a lot of sights on my own.
Man: OK, and my last question. What is your advice to future applicants for such summer jobs?
Woman: First and foremost – do NOT hesitate. I know leaving your life behind even for just a few months may seem
frightening, but if I could do it, so can you. Secondly, choose your job wisely. I think focusing on the skills
you may acquire is more important than choosing the company itself. And definitely plan everything well
in advance. Leaving anything until the last moment causes unnecessary stress.

Living with diabetes is not fun, but you can get used to it. My diagnosis was reached when I was in primary school
and I was in fact quite lucky, as my mum noticed the symptoms relatively quickly. She suspected diabetes, as it runs
in my family – my grandparents are diabetic too, so the doctors knew what tests to give me. Anyway, now I need to
test my blood regularly and take insulin if my blood sugar level is incorrect. I also need to exercise and watch my
diet, as physical activity and healthy food are the best ways to keep this chronic condition in check. This is quite
important information for all the 36,000 teens in the UK who live with diabetes.

Speaker 2.
When you’re into sport, you’re definitely more accident-prone than other people, especially if your discipline involves
challenging tricks. So one day I was on the stairs at my house trying to do an ollie. It’s when you jump and the
skateboard stays under your feet. Anyway, one moment I’m in the air and the next thing I know, I’m opening my eyes
and there is my brother hovering over me and asking if I understand him. Apparently, I fell and hit my head so hard
that I passed out, so he called an ambulance. I was taken to hospital for a check-up and ordered to stay for
observation, as the diagnosis was a minor concussion. I’m recovering now at home, but I still have occasional
headaches.

Speaker 3.
Last night I watched another House, M.D. episode with my family and we were all absolutely astonished by it. In this
episode an adult male is admitted to hospital with symptoms of fainting, heart and lung problems and a fever.
He is really sick, so Doctor House suggests that he might have been exposed to some toxic substances, but other
doctors insist that he is suffering from a simple infection. However, the man’s condition gets worse. The doctors run
some more tests and finally find out that the diagnosis is chickenpox – a disease that is usually harmless to children
but often dangerous for adults. Fascinating, isn’t it? I had no idea that if an adult catches chickenpox, it can cause so
many problems for them.

This year my school decided to hold a Mental Health Awareness Day on October 10th, since it is the day dedicated
by the World Health Organisation to mental health problems. We’ve all been affected by the recent pandemic and
unfortunately, some of us have been struggling to get over its negative effects. According to research, the pandemic
caused a 25% increase in cases of depression and anxiety worldwide, mainly due to the high levels of stress
experienced during social isolation. That’s why it’s incredibly important to talk about these things and be able to
recognise early symptoms of mental illness in order to start treatment as soon as possible.

Speaker 5.
My family has been under a lot of stress since last month, when my younger sister suffered from a severe allergic
reaction at school. After eating lunch in the canteen, she suddenly started to vomit and had some difficulty breathing.
Fortunately, her form tutor quickly called an ambulance. It turned out that the salad dressing contained peanut
butter, which she has been allergic to since early childhood, and the school cook had simply failed to remember to
fill in the label containing information about the ingredients! Can you believe it?! Now, my mum packs a home-made
lunch for my sister to take to school every day.

Woman: Hi Mark, I didn’t know you’d already come back from your trip to the USA. How was it?
Man: Oh, it was a little bumpy at times, but I have to admit I had a wonderful time.
Woman: Why bumpy? Were you travelling off the beaten track?
Man: No, nothing of the sort. My suitcase got lost at the airport and I had to wait a few days for it to be found.
Of course, my passport and other vital items were in my hand luggage, so it could have been worse.
And later some of the items on my list of places to visit had to be altered because of unexpected
circumstances. For example, one of the museums I wanted to see was being redecorated, and the
exhibition I really wanted to see wasn’t open to the public.
Woman: Oh, I see. And where did you go exactly? America is so big.
Man: Well, as you know, last year I went to see New York, Philadelphia and Washington, right? This time I wanted
to have a closer look at the Southeast, so I flew to Miami and from there I travelled via Orlando to New
Orleans.
Woman: And what did you like the most?
Man: Oh, that’s a difficult question, but I guess New Orleans is the place I would definitely recommend. The city
is truly charming, although I didn’t really know what to expect when I got there.
Woman: And why is that?
Man: You’ve probably heard of Hurricane Katrina. In 2005, it caused massive flooding and destroyed about
80% of the city. Fortunately, most of the city’s residents had been evacuated before the hurricane struck.
Yet, despite all the efforts, there were still over 1,800 fatalities, and the city’s population was halved because
so many houses were destroyed and people had to move out of the city.
Woman: Now I get your concerns. But you mentioned you enjoyed the city, so how is it now?
Man: Luckily, the famous French Quarter escaped flooding because it is above sea level. It is the historic heart
of the city, with wonderful architecture and a vibrant nightlife along Bourbon Street. It’s so picturesque
and extraordinary with its multi-cultural heritage that I think it’s the most amazing place I’ve ever seen.
Probably also because of that, New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana are often referred to as “Hollywood
South.” A lot of directors choose them as settings for their productions. For instance, The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button and Steel Magnolias were both shot in Louisiana.
Woman: Wow, I wish I could go there one day.
