01. DESCRIPTION
DETAILED SPECIFICATION

This work is for brickwork structures, also the construction of brick layers, in
accordance with the Specifications like using the English bonds, 1st class bricks,
dimensions shown on the Drawings or as required by the Engineer.

02. MATERIALS

Specifications for Materials

A) Bricks – The brick should be of First class bricks. First class bricks shall be made from good brick earth
free from saline deposits, and shall be proper moulded. They shall be thoroughly burnt and
should be of uniform size and proper red color, shall be regular and uniform in size, shape and
texture with sharp square edges and parallel faces. They must be homogeneous in texture and emit
a clear metallic ringing sound when struck one against the other. They shall be free from flaws, crack
s, chips, stones,modules of lime. A first class brick shall not absorb more than 1/6th of its weight of
water after being soaked for one hour, and shall show no sign of efflorescence on drying an strength
should not be less than 100kg per sq cm. First class bricks not meeting these requirements shall not
be used under any circumstances.

B) CEMENT: Cement shall be used as specified in ABC section

C) Fine Aggregate: Fine aggregate shall be used as specified in ABC section.

D) Water: Water shall be used as specified in ABC Section.

Specifications for Mortar

Cement mortar shall consist of a mixture of one part by weight of cement to four parts by weight of sand. The cement and
sand shall be mixed dry and in the specified proportion until the colour of the mixture is uniform . Approved water shall
then be added uniformly . The water /cement ratio in no case shall exceed as directed by the Engineer . The mixing shall
be done on a clean board or platform with tied joints, to avoid leakage . At the close of each days work the mixing
equipments and pans shall be thoroughly cleaned . Cement mortar shall be mixed in such quantities as can be used in the
work within 30 minutes .

DETAILED SPECIFICATION

A) SOAKING OF BRICKS : All bricks shall be thoroughly soaked in water by submerging them in clean
water for at least four hours before use.

B) BRICKLAYING: The bricklaying shall be English bond unless mentioned by engineer . Each brick shall
be properly bedded with frog upward and set by gently tapping with handle of
trowel . Half or cut bricks shall not be used except where necessary to complete the
Bonds. Thickness of brickwork shall be kept uniform.

C) JOINTS: Brick shall be so laid that all joints are full of mortar. The thickness of joints shall not
Exceed 1.0cm . The face of brickwork shall be cleaned on the same day on which
brickwork is laid and all mortar droppings removed promptly

D) CURING: Brickwork shall be protected from rain by suitable covering when the mortar is used. Masonary work
In cement mortar or lime mortar shall be constantly moist on all faces for a minimum period of 7 days
. Brickwork carried out during the day shall be suitably marked indicating the date on which the work
is done so as to keep watch on the curing period .

E) PAYMENT: The work payment shall be paid for at the Contract unit prices per cubic
metre of brickwork or daily wage system or specified by engineer.
