IDENTIFYING YOUR STRENGTHS

The sooner you understand the things you’re good at, the better this
journey will be for you. Based on what I’ve leant, you’ll have certain
task you’ll love to do in your clothing brand more than others. I’ve
put them in 3 main categories:

Creative - Example: You love to work on designs or building your

website seem easy.

Operations - Example: You love packing orders or organizing your

inventory.

Marketing - Example: You find it easy to share your products and

create content. You can sell anyone, anything, if you put effort in it.

These categories are not limited to the things mentioned above but
it should give you an idea which category you might fall in. I think
most people will fall in 1 of the categories but a few will fall into all 3
or 2.

Once you decide this, you’ll quickly realized that if you find a task
difficult, it doesn’t mean that your brand sucks or that you shouldn’t
start your business. Instead you’ll know that your not good at that
thing and you’ll need to learn the skill and get better at it or pay
someone to do it.

Which category/categories do you think you’ll be good at?

If you selected two, which two would you fall in?

THREE QUESTIONS
TO ASK YOURSELF

QUESTION 1: AM I FINANCIALLY STABLE?

This will be a hard truth to face but you have to face it. I want you to
take a second and recognize your current financial situation. Are you
living check to check? Do you struggle with money management?
Do you make poor money choices? Write your honest answers
below.

Before starting your clothing brand, I HIGHLY suggest that you get
your finances straight first. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but at least
be able to pay your bills on time and learn how to manage your
money better.

For some reason, people ignore the money part of a clothing brand
and think that having “fire” pieces is the only thing that matters. The
last thing you want to do is take on a bunch of debt to fund a busi-
ness that has no proof that it will be successful.

Now, once you’ve accepted your financial situation, the next step is
how to improve it. This is where you’ll have to put your pride to the
side. Ask yourself, what can I do to make more money? Maybe drive
Uber or Doordash if you have a car. You can even take on another job
or a few extra shifts at your current job. Just figure something out
that’s legal. So what can you do?

QUESTION 2: WHAT IS MY WHY?

Your “why” will be the reason driving you and your brand. I suggest
making your “why” more than just “making money”. I like to have
two “whys”: “Why do I want to start a clothing brand?” And “Why
does my brand exist?”

The first “why” should be very personal to you. For example, “why do
I want to start a clothing brand?”: “Because I want to change my
family tree and impact the world.” That answer has some emotion to
it, and it’s not focused around money. We already know that we’ll
make money, it’s a business. So there’s no reason to focus on that
alone.

The next “why” is, “why does my brand exist?”: “My brand will en-
courage people to become the best version of themselves.” Just like
before, this answer has some emotion to it. You want to give people
an emotional attachment to your brand. That will separate you from
other brands and help build customer loyalty.

Take a look at some of the big brands. They all have “whys”, so why
shouldn’t you? Always THINK BIG. You’re creating the next global
brand.

Why do I want to start a clothing brand?

Why does my brand exist?

QUESTION 3: WHAT CLOTHING BRAND MODEL

DO I WANT TO HAVE?
There are multiple ways to start and run a clothing brand. Over the
years, I’ve seen and tried several different options. I’ve come to the
conclusion that whatever model you choose, it will all be up to your
current situation and what you think will be the best option for you.

There are many models you can use to start your clothing brand.
These are my top 5:

1. Print on Demand
2. Dropshipping
3. DIY
4. Screen Printing
5. Cut & Sew

If you find a model interesting, do more research on it and

understand how it works. I won’t be able to explain each model in
depth and highlight all the pros and cons.

Keep in mind, that for all the models you still have to do a degree of
work to make it sucessful, regardless of how easy they may seem.

CLOTHING BRAND MODEL #1:

PRINT ON DEMAND
Print on demand is the process where the product or item is only
made when a customer purchases from your website. After the
order is made, it will then be sent to the customer. During this pro-
cess, you never make contact with the product.

Customer goes to Makes a Order gets sent to 3rd

Two popular print on demand companies are Printful and Printify.

Two of the downsides with this model is that you won’t have control
over the quality of the product being made, and how quick the cus-
tomer gets their order.

CLOTHING BRAND MODEL #2:

DROPSHIPPING
This model is basically identical to print on demand. The main differ-
ence is that dropshipping products are usually made before an order
is placed. You would source a product and it would be sent to the
customer once an order is placed.

packaged to customer

Just like print on demand, you won’t have control over quality and
shipping time. However, you won’t have to worry about fulfilling
orders yourself. You can source dropshipping products from places
like Aliexpress and CJ Dropshipping. Don’t forget to do more re-
search.

CLOTHING BRAND MODEL #3:

DIY
For this model, just as the name suggests, you’ll be doing everything
youself. From marketing, making the product, shipping it, etc. You
typically will use a heat press and heat transfers to make your prod-
ucts.

The cool thing about this model is that you can buy blank t-shirts,
hoodies (or whatever you decide to sell), in bulk for cheap, and make
them as orders come in. You also get to control the quality and ship-
ping since you’ll be doing it yourself.

One major downside to this model is that, if your product is not

made well it won’t last long. This can affect your business in the long
term since customers might not want to purchase a second time.

CLOTHING BRAND MODEL #4:

SCREEN PRINTING
For this model, you’ll be able to produce great quality products with-
out doing all the work. Head over to Google and search for local
screen printers. Make a list of 3-5 shops and go check them out per-
sonally. Make sure you see the quality of work they produce. You do
have bad screen printers. Once you select a screen printer, it’s time
to source your blanks.

You can buy blank t-shirts, hoodies, etc., from websites like
jiffyshirts.com, clothingshoponline.com, superlinewholesale.com.
Your screen printer can also source blanks for you, but they will up-
charge you. You’re better off doing it yourself. Time to get your
blanks printed.

Once they’re done, you pick them up, package them, list them on
your website, and market them. You will also be responsible to pack-
age and send orders out to your customers.

CLOTHING BRAND MODEL #5:

CUT & SEW
This model is usually the goal for most clothing brand owners if they
didn’t start with it. This is where you’ll be able to make and sell
custom pieces specific to your brand.

You’ll find a manufacturer, whether overseas or local. Give them

clear and detailed information, from measurements to application
method, and they’ll use that to make a piece or collection for your
brand. You can send them all that information in a tech pack. They’ll
make a sample and if you are satisfied with the sample, you can
then start bulk production.

A popular place to find manufacturers is on Alibaba. I’ve made

videos explaining how to do that so be sure to check them out on
my TikTok.
