DON CARLOS PUBLIC MARKET

Centuries ago, not every town had a market open everyday. More often than not a large once-a-
week market took place in a town, with vendors or a smaller collection of stalls on the other days.
These were the sources of cooking ingredients for many provincial as well as city families.

As a consumer, we knew since the start of civilization, people have traded goods with their
neighbors. As culture advanced, they were able to travel farther afield to trade their own goods for
desirable products found elsewhere. The Don Carlos Public Market is the kind of globalization that
we knew of the present. In our country, lots of cities have public markets. These markets can take
various forms, and each is a unique reflection of the city where it’s located. No two public markets
are the same, but there are a few things that define a public market and make it different just like our
Don Carlos Public Market. Our public market primarily sells food. Different public markets focus on
different types of products, but typically, a shopper can find produce, meat, fish, dairy products, spices,
and various specialty and prepared foods.

Here in Don Carlos Public Market, small independent businesses, and each shop or stall is owner-
operated. Rather than one company selling every item, like you would find in a supermarket, a public
market features dozens of vendors selling food and other products they made themselves. That’s why
I’ll tell you, this is globalization which is associated with rapid and significant human changes. The
movements of people from rural to urban areas has accelerated, and the growth of cities in the
developing world especially is linked to substandard living for many.

In my years of understanding, public markets are more than just a place to shop; everything of
globalization in every country starts from there. 1

SAN MIGUEL CORPORATION

(September 29, 1890; 132 years
ago in Manila, Philippines)

a. History
As a business grows and expands, eventually the goal of a business is to transform
from company into a corporate powerhouse. Once the goal of a company turned corporate
is met a corporation is to operate eventually internationally within other countries.
This is where San Miguel Corporation (SMC) excelled, the corporation was originally
founded in 1890 as a single brewery in the Philippines. The Company has since then
transformed itself from a beverage, food and packaging business into a diversified
conglomerate with businesses in fuel and oil, energy, infrastructure, and real estate
industries. Let’s explore how SAN MIGUEL CORPORATION evolved over the years:
1890
Established in 1890, La Fabrica de Cerveza de San Miguel, Southeast Asia’s first
brewery produced and bottled what would eventually become one of the bestselling beers
in the region. Within the span of a generation, San Miguel Beer would become an icon
among beer drinkers.
1914
By 1914, San Miguel Beer was being exported from its headquarters in Manila to
Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guam. A pioneer in Asia, San Miguel established a brewery in
Hong Kong in 1948, the first local brewer in the crown colony.
2021
Today, San Miguel Beer–the Company’s flagship product–is one of the largest selling
beers and among the top 10 beer brands in the world. While brewing beer is the company’s
heritage, San Miguel subsequently branched out into the food and packaging businesses.
From the original cerveza that first rolled off the bottling line, San Miguel Corporation
has since expanded its portfolio to produce a wide range of popular beverage, food and
packaging products which have–for over a century–catered to generations of consumers’
ever changing tastes. It has also diversified into heavy industries including power and other
utilities, mining, energy, tollways and airports.
The Company’s manufacturing operations extend beyond the Philippines to Hong
Kong, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia. Its products are exported to
major markets around the world. Continuing a tradition of product quality, San Miguel is
capitalizing on its unique strengths in brands and distribution to weave its products more
deeply into the fabric of everyday life. Not just in the Philippines but in the Asia-Pacific
region.

b. Worldwide reach.
Beyond years, San Miguel's manufacturing operations have extended beyond its home
market to Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia, and
its products are exported to 60 markets around the world.
And there’s more, San Miguel's partnerships with major international companies have
given the Company access to the latest technologies and skills. Our marketplace
experience, technical expertise, and innovation capabilities, while largely homegrown, also
reflect our long term partnerships with world class players.
San Miguel's joint venture partners include Hormel Foods Corporation, Yamamura
Glass and Fuso Machine and Mold Manufacturing of Japan. A strategic equity investment
in San Miguel by Japan's leading brewer and global player, Kirin Brewery Company, Ltd.
has further enhanced San Miguel's competitive position in Asia, a region in which it is
already well placed.

c. Attributes
We, people of the Philippines, witnessed the success of San Miguel Corporation to
become one of the largest and most diversified conglomerates in the country, making the
world inspire for over 130 years through beverages, food, packaging, fuel and oil, power
and infrastructure.
According to study, the San Miguel Corporation’s economic market achieved the
revenues equivalent to about 4.9% of the country's GDP in 2021. Originally founded in
1890 as a single product brewery in the Philippines, SMC today has highly integrated
operations with ownership in market leading businesses and investments in various
sectors, such as beverages, food, packaging, energy, fuel and oil, infrastructure, property
development and leasing, cement, car distributorship and banking services. SMC has a
portfolio of companies that are interwoven into the economic fabric of the Philippines,
benefiting from, as well as contributing to the development and economic progress of the
nation.
San Miguel's goal is to help people enjoy and make progress in their lives through
the many products and services that the company offers. To give every customer and
consumer the touch access to the best they can offer—whether in terms of quality, or
affordability or choice.
