RIZAL 101 COVERAGE (PRELIM)

CHAPTER 1: UNDERSTANDING THE RIZAL LAW


REPUBLIC ACT NO.1425 -an act to include in the curricula of all public and private
schools, colleges and universities courses on the life, works
and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels NOLI ME
TANGERE & EL FILIBUSTERISMO, authorizing the printing
and distribution thereof, and for other purposes.

APRIL 3, 1956 –Senate Bill No.438 was filed by the Senate Committee on Education.

APRIL 17,1956 –Senate Committee on Education Chair Jose P. Laurel sponsored the bill
and began delivering speeches for the proposed legislation.

APRIL 19, 1956 –House Bill No. 5561, an identical version of SB 438, was filed by
Representative Jacob Z. Gonzales.

JACOB Z. GONZALES –He filed a House Bill No.5561.

APRIL 23, 1956 –When the debates started.

MAY 2, 1956 –The House Committee on Education was approved the bill without
amendments.

MAY 9, 1956 –The debates commenced.


- Sen. Jose P. Laurel proposed amendments to the bill.

CLARO M. RECTO –The main sponsor and defender of the Rizal Bill.

MAY 14, 1956 –Similar amendments were adopted to the House version.

MAY 17, 1956 –The Senate and House Versions were approved.

JUNE 12, 1956 –President Magsaysay signed the bill into law which became R.A.1425.

BILL –a measure which, if passed through the legislative process, becomes a law.

CHAPTER 2: NATION AND NATIONALISM
NATION –Is a community of people that are believed to share a link with one another
based on cultural practices, language, religion or believe system, and
historical experience, to name a few.

STATE –Is a political entity that has sovereignty over a defined territory.

NATION-STATE –Is a fusion of the elements of the nation and the state.
-A state ruling over a nation.

BAYAN/BANUA -Indigenous Filipino concepts of community and territory that may be


related to nationalism.

NATION-BUILDING –A project undertaken with the goal of strengthening the bond of


the nation.

PATRIOTISM –A feeling of attachment to one’s homeland.

SOVEREIGNTY –The authority to govern a polity without external interference/


incursions.

PRIMODIALISM –It argues that a national identity has always existed and nations have
“ETHIC CORES”.

MODERNIST –View that nation, national identity, and nationalism are products of the
modern condition and shaped by modernity.

SOCIAL CONSRUCTIVIST –View that nationalism is socially constructed and imagined


by the people who identify with a group.

KAPWA –Is the important concept in the country’s social relations.

CHAPTER 3: REMEMBERING RIZAL


DECEMBER 30, 1896 –Rizal’s execution

JOVE REX AL –Which literally mean “God, King of All”.

RIZALISTA –A religious movement that believes in the divinity of Jose Rizal.

MIGUEL DE UNAMUNO –A Spanish writer and philosopher who gave Rizal the title
“TAGALOG CHRIST”.
APOLINARIO DE LA CRUZ –Who founded the religious confraternity Confradia de
San Jose.

FELIPE SALVADOR –Who founded the messianic society Santa Iglesia was called
by his followers as the “Filipino Christ” and the “King of the
Philippines”.

AUGUST 3, 1902 –The Philippine Independent Church (PIC) became a major religious
sect with a number of followers supporting its anti-friar and anti-
imperialist campaigns.

1903 –The PIC’s official organ published the “Acta de Canonizacion de los Grandes
Martires de la Patria Dr. Rizal y PP. Burgos, Gomez y Zamora”(Proceeding
of the Canonization of the Martyrs of the Country Dr. Rizal and Father Burgos,
Gomez, Zamora).

SEPTEMBER 24, 1903 –The Council of Bishops by Gregorio Aglipay met in Manila.

CANDIDA BALANTAC –The founder of Adarnista or the Iglesiang Pilipina.

SAMBAHANG RIZAL –Literally the “Rizal Church”


-Founded by the late Basilio Aromin.

SAMAHAN NG WATAWAT NG LAHI –Is said to have been established by the


Philippine national heroes and Arsenio de Guzman
in 1911.
