2.)How did the Philippine economy and society change in the 19 th century?
During this period, vast economic, political, social, and cultural currents were felt. Change,
however, had its initial ripples in the previous century. By the late 18 th century, the monarchy in
Spain experienced a dynastic shift from the Habsburgs to Bourbons. Under the new leadership,
Spain recalibrated colonial policies that would have an effect on the Philippines.

3.) What were the cultural influences of the Chinese mestizos on Philippine society?
The Chinese mestizos were an important element of Philippine society in the 19 th century. They
played a significant role in the formation of the Filipino middle class, in the agitation for
reforms, in the 1898 revolution, and in the formation of what is now known as the Filipino
nationality.
