1. Hadiths are categorized into three types based on the strength of their chain of narrators (sanad): sahih (authentic), hasan (good), and da'if (weak).
2. Sahih hadiths have a continuous sanad from beginning to end with narrators that have perfect memory and meet other integrity criteria.
3. Hasan hadiths also have a continuous sanad but the narrators may not have perfect memory.

Ditinjau dari segi nilai sanad, hadits dikelompokan jadi tiga macam, yaitu shohih, hasan dan dhoif.
1. Hadits Shohih, yaitu hadits yang cukup sanadnya dari awal
sampai akhir dan oleh orang-orang yang sempurna hafalannya. Syaratnya : Sanad bersambung, perawinya adil, berakhlak baik, tidak fasik, terjaga kehormatannya, dhobit, dan hadits tidak bertentangan dengan hadits mutawatir atau dengan ayat Al- qur’an. Hadits shohih terbagi menjadi dua diantaranya shohih lizatihi dan shohih lighoiri.
2. Hadits Hasan, yaitu hadits yang sanadnya bersambung,
diriwayatkan oleh perawi yang adil, namun tidak sempurna hafalannya.
3. Hadits Dhoif (lemah) yaitu hadits yang tidak memenuhi syarat
shohih dan hasan. Hadits dhoif ini terbagi dalam beberapa macam. Contoh : “Barang siapa berkata kepada orang miskin: ‘bergembiralah’, maka wajib baginyha surga”.(HR. Ibnu A’di). Diantara perawi hadits tersebut menurut Imam Yahya, ia seorang pendusta. Sedangkan Ibnu Hiban memvonisnya sebagai pemalsu hadits.
