MYP Level 1/2
1) Isabella is using matchsticks to complete the following shapes.

Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3

a) Complete the table of values below showing the relationship between the Stage (S) and
the number of matchsticks (M).

S 1 2 3 4

b) Using the information in the table, how many matchsticks would be used to create Stage
0?

c) Draw what you think Stage 0 would look like.

d) In words, describe what is happening to the number of matchsticks each time a new stage
is added to the pattern.

e) Using the information in the table, complete a rule that describes the relationship for the

number of matchsticks (M) needed at each stage of the pattern (S).

f) Use the rule above to work out how many matchsticks are needed to build Stage 10 of the
pattern.

g) Use Desmos to graph your equation. Take a screen shot of your equation and include in
the space provided.

2) Taniela is using blocks to create the following figures.

a) Complete the table of values below showing the relationship between the Figure (F) and
the number of square blocks in each (N).

F 1 2 3 4

b) Write down an algebraic rule that describes the relationship between the number of
square blocks (N) in each figure (F).

c) If Moira has 145 blocks, what is the largest figure she would be able to create? Use
mathematical calculations to justify your answer.

d) Use Desmos to graph your equation. Ensure your graph includes all values up to the 15 th

Figure. Take a screen shot of your equation and include in the space provided.

e) Use your graph to determine how many blocks would be required for the 11 th Figure.
Show the process on your graph in part d).

3) Charlie is an electrician and charges a $65 callout fee for each new job. He then charges
$85 per hour.

a) Complete the table of values below to show the relationship between the cost of the job
(C) and the number of hours (H) that Charlie works.

b) Write an equation showing the relationship between the cost of the job (C) and the
number of hours (H) that Charlie works.

c) Use your equation to find the cost of a job that takes Charlie 5 hours and 15 minutes to
complete.

d) Plot the equation from part b) on Desmos and insert a screenshot in the space below.

Use your graph to find out how long it will take for Charlie to earn $800. Write your answer
correct to 1 decimal place.

e) Sara is looking for an electrician. She contacts Charlie and thinks that he is quite
expensive. She then calls Ava who charges a $35 call out fee and $105 per hour. Sara thinks
that she will need the electrician for 3 and a half hours. Should Sara choose Charlie or Ava?
Justify your answer with mathematical calculations.

f) Sara wants to know if it will always be cheaper to choose one electrician over the other.

Use Desmos to add the graph of Ava’s cost to Charlie’s. Insert the graph in the space below.

g) Use your graph and write down how you would explain to Sara when she should choose
Charlie and when she should choose Ava for the electrical job.

4) Marc and Cleo are organising a river cruise for their friends. The cost to hire the boat is
$750 and the cost of catering for each guest is $62.

a) Complete the table of values below to show the relationship between the total cost (C)
and the number of guests (G).

G 30 40 50 60 70 80

b) Write an equation showing the relationship between the total cost (C) and the number of
guests (G).

c) Plot the equation from part b) on Desmos and insert a screenshot in the space below.

d) Marc and Cleo only have $3500 with which to hire the boat and pay for catering costs.
What is the maximum number of guests they can afford to invite and stay below their
budget?
e) If the price per guest increases, what effect will this change have on the graph?

f) If the cost of hiring the boat is reduced, what effect will this change have on the graph?

g) The boat company has not accounted for the number of children that are attending the
river cruise. Marc and Cleo discover that the cost of children joining the cruise is $21 per
child. Write a formula showing the total cost (C) for the river cruise that includes the number
of adults (A), number of children (K) and the boat hire. (Use the original prices: adult = $62,
boat hire = $750)

h) Using the equation from part g) determine the cost of the river cruise for 42 adults and 17
children?

i) If Marc and Cleo have 23 children joining the river cruise, how many adults can they invite
and still stick to their original budget of $3500? Show all your working.
