TRY TO FIND OUT

By Maria Emma B. Susi

Little information, big information,

I need to find answers to a question.

Can I find it in a book, or a newspaper,

Pictures, or signages, perhaps a computer?

I have to read, I must understand,

Know the meaning of this and that.

Do I need to go in a library,

Seat a while, read, read, happily.

5
Questions big, questions small,

The answers are just hiding in the hall,

Whenever there is bit to know,

There are many sources of information.

Open your book, read the news,

There are various ways to choose,

Comprehend the picture and the drawing,

And try to know their meaning.

Answer the following questions.

1. What would you want to read in books?

2. What was the most interesting thing you learned from the
books?
3. What makes you think this book is going to be interesting?
4. Did you enjoy reading books in school? Where is your favorite
place to read books?
5. How often do you go to the library?

6
What is It

Many of you have questions in mind. Things that are not yet
answered. You know, the lack of answer to your questions do not
mean that there is no answer. In fact, there are answers. You just
don’t know where to find them out. Today, we are going to
discuss what these so-called Sources of Information are and why
these are important in our life.

These sources of information are of many kinds – books,

newspaper, pictures, signages, and computer.

Let’s identify some of the basic sources of information:

1. A ______________________ contains sheets of paper bound

together. Inside the paper are information about many things. If
you are in the school, you would see these inside the library. They
are used in getting information you need in your assignments.

2. A ________________________ is also a bounded sheets but of

loose sheets of paper. These source of information tells about
what happened yesterday, entertainment news, and stories,
features and sometimes even poetry.

7
3. A ______________________ is a source of information that tells
something though images. It may or may not contain words but
by simply looking at it, an information is given.

4. A _____________________ is a source of information that tells

about something through symbols. Most of these do not have
words. But if they have, they are very short. Their meaning is
understood because they warn, direct, or guide us instruction.

5. It is a source of many information where books, newspaper,

images and pictures may be searched.

8
What’s More

Read the following story and fill appropriate words in the blanks.

The school program is over. However, Maryan’s service will

arrive at exactly 4:30 in the afternoon. Maryan went to the school
library to read a _______________. She asked the librarian for a
storybook.

The librarian happily gave it to her.

She opened the story book. While reading, one of her

classmates set the electric fan to fast. Some of the
_________________ were thrown in the air. The librarian told them to
clean up the mess and return the materials on their proper places.

Minutes later, some of the students become noisy. Maryan

and other readers cannot continue what they were reading
because of the noise and chattering at the back.

The librarian raise a _______________ that shows like this:

9
However, the noisy girls disobey the librarian’s warning. The
librarian raise another board but this time it shows this:

It is now the second warning. The library is now, in silence

and Maryan can peacefully study. She read the story silently.

Then, the bell rings at 4:30 and it is a signal that everyone

may fall in line towards their service. But Maryan is not yet done
with her reading, the librarian told her that she can read the story
in the _________________ if they have an access to the internet.

When she got home, Maryan gladly told her parents what
the librarian said. And they let Maryan continue to read the story
in their bedroom.
