Class : Sh3 Knowledgeable

Practical Investigation : Capacitors

Direction:
a. Series
1. Open the (https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/capacitor-lab)
2. Click on the “Multiple Capacitors” tab.
3. Click on three capacitors in series button.
4. Move the voltage slide to maximum and measure the voltage across the battery with the
voltmeter Vmax = 1.5 V. Click on three capacitors in series
5. Change the settings on the 3 capacitors to : C1= 1pF, C2= 2pF, C3= 2.5pF , as shown
below

CP/Phy/25/X/23 1
6. Now measure the voltage across each capacitor.
V1= 0.789 V
V2=0.395 V
V3= 0.316V

7. What is the relationship of voltages?

In a series circuit, the main voltages will be divided into each capacitor. Thus, the bigger
the value of the capacitor, the bigger the value of the voltage.

8. Using the stated capacitance (1.0x10-13 F, 2.0x10-13 F, 2.5x10-13 F) find the charge on each
capacitor.
q1= 0.79 x 10-13C q2= 0.79 x 10-13C q3= 0.79 x 10-13C

9. What is the total capacitance in Farads? Read metre.

The total capacitance of the series circuits is 0,53 x 10-13 F

b. Parallel
1. Open the (https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/capacitor-lab)
2. Click on the “Multiple Capacitors” tab.
3. Click on three capacitor in parallel button.
4. Move the voltage slide to maximum and measure the voltage across the battery with the
voltmeter Vmax = 1,5V. Click on three capacitors in series
5. Change the settings on the 3 capacitors to : C1= 1pF, C2= 2pF, C3= 2.5pF , as shown
below

CP/Phy/25/X/23 2
1. Now measure the voltage across each capacitor.

6. V1= 1.5V, V2= 1.5V, V3= 1.5V

7. What is the relationship of voltages?

In a parallel circuit, each capacitor receives the same voltage. The voltage on one of them
is independent of the others being present.

8. Using the stated capacitance (1.0x10-13 F, 2.0x10-13 F, 2.5x10-13 F) find the charge on each
capacitor.
q1=1.5x10-13 C q2=3.0x10-13C q3=3.75x10-13C

9. What is the total capacitance in Farads? Read metre.
