Chapter 8 Assignment

Chapter 8 of the book “Race & Ethnic Relations: American and Global Perspectives

10E” by Martin N. Marger focuses on describing the Hispanic Americans. In this chapter,

Martin describes the Hispanic Americans in greater depth including the status of Hispanics, their

manner of entry into the United States, the Hispanic’s racial status in the country. The chapter

also describes the main theme among the Hispanics and focuses on how the Latino minority

developed in the United States. The Hispanic groups entered the United States from South

America, Central America, and Dominican Republic.

Reflecting on the content of this chapter, I clearly understand the diversity that exists

within the Hispanic groups in the United States. These groups are considered the minority due to

their racial status in the country. By being considered the minority groups, their significance in

United States is underestimated. Therefore, this makes the Hispanics or Latino groups’ ethnic

composition, history, and cultural practices not to be recognized in the country. Due to these and

many other factors, I feel that the Hispanic Americans or the Latino groups such as the

immigrants from Central and South Americans, Dominican Republic, and other countries such as

Mexico and Puerto Rico experience several challenges in the country.

This chapter’s content about the Hispanic Americans also raises thoughts on the manner

in which the Hispanics entered the United States, the cultural and racial identity of the Hispanics,

and the impact of the racial classification among these groups. Some of the Hispanic groups

entered the country voluntarily while others conquered their entry. Thinking of these methods of

entry, I can understand the various challenges the Hispanics face while in the United States. The

cultural and racial identity of the Hispanics or Latino groups predisposes them to various

challenges including economic and social challenges in the country.
